Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places but seems like everyone wants between $3500-$6000 for engagement and wedding photos. And then there are individual prices for pictures and other stuff.

I guess the market sets the prices on these things. Anyone got a recommendation for a good photographer?

Unfortunately a lot of the real good photographers have increased their rates since everyone and their mom with an entry-level DSLR claim to be "professional photographers" now

Paid $4500 after tax for ultimate package from Rick King photography. Can't recommend him enough.

ETA: They have cheaper packages, but we didn't want to skimp on the pictures.

I have never been married, but I have constantly heard that a good photographer is the one thing that you do not want to go cheap on. Because you are going to be so busy that you won't remember anything.

See, I'm torn on this issue. As the price point of DSLRs and professional editing software has come down, its made photography accessible to people that never would've dreamed of it 20 years ago. Now, I've seen photos on Facebook from people that are "photographers" that look terrible, have no life. Its about more than just the camera.

I had family portraits done by a sorority sister of my wife's, and she is not a professional photographer, but our photos came out great. She did some nice retouching, caught great images out at City Park. One of the pictures of my daughter and I is sitting on my desk right now. And it cost me $200 for a 4 hour session, and we got to take as many pictures as we wanted.

Now, I could've paid Studio Tran or one of the bigger names in NOLA a grand to do photos, and I'm sure that the overall quality would be far superior to what I got. But I have no issue hanging the photos on my wall, they really turned out well.

Sometimes paying more doesn't always mean you're getting more value.

Family portraits aren't really in the same league as wedding photos. Anyone can take posed pictures. It's all about how well you capture the candid stuff that separates a great event photographer from some scrub with a dslr.

Paid $5000 for my photographer. Got us engagement photos, bridal shoot and the wedding (7 hours on wedding day I believe) and did an excellent job on the engagement shots so far. Best part is he gives you a disk with all the quality photos he takes and releases the copyright so you can get prints done where ever you want. We got 112 for our engagement shoot. Jason Cohen he travels too. Anywhere between Houston and NOLA I believe.
