seems like everyone wants between $3500-$6000 for engagement and wedding photos.

We paid around $2500 for the engagement/wedding photos but that didn't include digital rights which would have been an additional $2000. Most people I know who have gotten married are paying in the $5k+/-$1k

Our photographer made me sick. His pictures were very very shitty and he didn't even try to touch up or edit. I actually had to purchase software to make them half way decent to put in an album. We almost sued him because he didn't get me my album for over a year and a half (only 1 month for me to touch up photos). He said he got robbed and all of his stuff was stolen. So when the album did show up, we knew all of his stuff wasn't stolen since they had to be sent off to print. All of our photos we have around the house are from my mom.

We paid like 4-5k.

Lol, yeah, paying 4 grand for pictures when we got divorced after 2 1/2 years seems silly. Hindsight and all......

You'd do better paying 5-6 amateur photographers a couple hundred a piece and just pick the absolute best from that and do the editing and stuff yourself.

You still won't look at them 5k$ worth.

$5k is ridiculous for pics. That should be the whole wedding budget. Save $$$ for house or pay off student loans.

That's all fine and dandy, but maybe it's not your money to save? It's not like if you don't spend the money on the pics you magically get the $5k since most weddings are covered by the bride's parents who aren't just cutting you a check and telling you to do with it what you want.

Then don't use overpriced, overinflated ego photographers.

I can't wait until there are photobots to cut out the fleshy middle man entirely.

I couldn't convince the wife that pictures weren't that important...she had to have them. I also hate taking pictures. Anyways, we went with Courtney Dellafiora. I don't remember the cost, but I know she made it pretty painless and they came out good. Wife seems to be happy, so "happy wife, happy life"

Backyard country wedding at family place. Invitations from mail order. Stamps. Sams for liquor. Frat guys for bartenders. Disposable cameras for guest to take pics and a relative during the ceremony. Preacher, tables & chairs borrowed from the church. Food from the BBQ joint. Flowers from local florist. Aunt to make the cakes. Jazz quartet. DJ friend to fill in.

Bout $5k. Good to go!

I am an amateur photographer. I shoot landscape and street scenes.

A friend of mine contacted me to do her daughter's wedding this weekend. I first told her no because a wedding photographer and a street photographer are two different animals.

After telling me about the other photographer that will be at the wedding (a family member of her ex-husband) and how that when she did her other daughter's wedding, all the pictures were of her ex-husband's side of the family and the mother of the bride was left out of most images, I told her I would do it for free (for the practice) but don't be mad if I do not get one good image.

I have seen the other photographer's stuff, she is not that good, looks like she used a point and shoot.

I have high-end amateur equipment, nearly $6000 just in bodies, speedlites, and lenses. I know a good professional camera body runs $6000+ by itself.

Some people here mention "Facebook Pro Photographers" (thats what I call them). If you do not follow even the basic of photography rules of composition, lighting, etc, you will never get a good image.

That price is about right. As other people said, I found the most valuable thing having copyrights to the photos. I got like six packs of CDs full of my pics with copyright releases from the photog in them.

Also consider whether they will charge you for travel, etc. My package included engagements, bridals, rehearsal/dinner and the entire wedding day (probably about 12 hours because she showed up for EVERYTHING). She didn't charge me to travel from LC to BR for bridals either. She's going to Houston for my sister's.

If you really need to cut, you can always not do engagements or bridals and just look for a day-of package.

Unfortunately a lot of the real good photographers have increased their rates since everyone and their mom with an entry-level DSLR claim to be "professional photographers" now

I got one of these people, someone who did it as a side gig for extra cash to do my wedding and engagement/bridal whatever pics. Cost me maybe $1000-1500. Pics came out fine. Then again we wanted it to be small and easy so I guess it all depends on what youre looking for.
