Family portraits aren't really in the same league as wedding photos.

I'm not arguing with that. The wife and I paid a lot of money for our wedding portraits, and we ended up not buying a single one of them from the photographer. I don't know if he had an off day or something, but they were terrible in my opinion. The wedding photos we have in the house were taken by family and friends.

It's all about how well you capture the candid stuff that separates a great event photographer from some scrub with a dslr.

This is the point of my other post. There are plenty of talented people that are able to pursue photography because of the pricepoints of equipment now. You can't dismiss someone just because they are running a business off a facebook page.

EDIT: I will add that the price included our engagement photos and Mrs. Prez's Bridal portraits. Those came our fantastic.

Best part is he gives you a disk with all the quality photos he takes and releases the copyright so you can get prints done where ever you want.

This is huge and that guy won't be doing that for long once he figures out that no one else does this. Jump on that deal and get it in writing. Most charge you to take the pics and then hold the photos hostage with watermarks over the image until you pay a second raping fee. As far as the questions in the OP, you never go back and look at the pics (I don't even know where mine are located) but you are a complete dumbass if you don't get photos and have to live with a pissed off SO. If you get them, she won't ever look at them. If you don't get them, she will bitch every day that they aren't available.

Save yourself a lot of hassle and moolah and call the whole damn thing off. Weddings are maybe one of the biggest scams on the market today.

He's been doing it for awhile actually. The guy does really quality work too. I think that's what keeps him in business. I already liked his work and when I read that he gives us all the pics copyright free, I made up my mind.

Which you can do over as many times as you want. You only get one shot at wedding photos.

Not so much a scam, but a horrible financial decision. Just as young men go into more debt on a engagement ring they can not afford just to please the wife. Most young folks are saddled with student loan debt already. I have seen to many poor financial decisions made when couples get married. Not all, but a lot.

<---- Married for 18 years. Wedding photos are like High School Class Rings. Every body buys them but haven't looked at them in the last 18 years or know where they are today.

Good luck convincing the future Mrs. that it's not really that important.

That sounds about right.

A good photographer is soooo important. You could get married at McDonalds and the right photographer could still make it look beautiful. Lol.

Pretty much. We have about 4 wedding pictures framed and the rest are on our computer which we never look at.

We did pay a little more for the wedding video which we've actually looked at a few times.

The CDs with all the pictures on them are still sitting in my firebox with her handwriting on them. I don't think they moved once since then and I don't remember ever looking at them.
I think most photographers are overrated anyway. Everything about a fricking wedding is overrated and overpriced anyway.
I'm glad we didn't spend much on ours, and we still overspent.

Lol, yeah, paying 4 grand for pictures when we got divorced after 2 1/2 years seems silly. Hindsight and all......
