Backup Quarterback Should We

Keep the experienced vet McCown at a $600K cap hit?
Is Griffin ready for the backup reigns in year two? Only $500K also.
rotoworld-
The Chiefs can save $1.4 million by releasing Chase Daniel.
Daniel is due a $2.35 million base salary next year and isn't a lock to beat out Tyler Bray as Alex Smith's backup. He signed a three-year, $10 million contract last March and could be cut after just one season with the Chiefs.
Interesting option. If he is let go prolly could get him back for more usual backup QB money. Like $1mil or less. McCown's brother, Josh in Chicago (also UFA) showed the value of a guy that can fill in solidly. He was 3-2 as a starter and kept them in contention. The bigger issue than cap hit would be whether ya want to use two roster spots on backup QBs. They did 3 last yr cuz Griffin wasn't there yet.
Who say ye?

So keep both McCown and Griffin for 1.1 mil or cut them both and sign Daniel, who we've already cut once, for 1 mil?
Should I tell you the better choice or can you figure it out?

the staff must see something in griffin if they kept him on the roster this year

No. That ship has sailed. The future is Ryan Griffin. We put him on the active to keep him in Nawlins and out of St. Louie. He will be our man in the wings learning under Brees. Just as Green Bay did with DAAA bull CHECK Rodgers. He was great at Tulane with absolutely no talent around him and a very high character person. I say no to Daniels.

I'm thinking we keep RG4 as our only back up. As cap strapped as we are we can't keep 3 (2 back ups on the 53 man roster). If we didn't have RG4 I would be in favor of Chase Daniel over McCown for the right price. But lets face it, I could be the back up because (for now) our sucess depends on Brees. I believe RG4 has the talent, if/when he gets his chance I think he'll be better than average.

No reason to go back to Daniel and honestly if McCown had spent the whole summer with us the year before instead of just preseason he would have beat out Daniel anyway.
Daniel has never shown anything special other than the ability to escape and run on occasion. He's not that good of a throwing QB.
Honestly I thought Griffin showed about the same level in his rookie year that Daniel showed in his last year here.
I think the bigger question is if Griffin is ready to be the backup this year so we can bring in another young guy and see if we can find a gem, because while I saw a few flashes from Griffin he still seemed a ways from being a great QB much less a mid level starter.
In short, keep bringing in young guys until we find something that actually does more than occasionally impress. Only keep McCown if Griffin isn't showing enough to be a competent starter(in the event of an emergency).
Edit:
Also not sure where you're getting McCown's cap number. Is that the $570,000 with a $30,000 bonus? If so there's no guarantee the Saints give him the full allowable bonus or any bonus at all. Not saying they won't either.

I say we dump McCown and keep Griffin. He showed some good potential during the preseason, and we need all the cap room we can get.

With the way the cap works, we don't really save money cutting McCown if he signs for the minimum because we have to pay 53 guys anyway.
If he was not resigned, or signed and cut later, it's because a)we think Griffin can be a real backup/potential future starter and b)we need the spot for another position.

Ah. I'll admit I don't know much about how the cap works. I do, however, believe that we should still go with Griffin over McCown.

All good. Just spreading the word.
I'd like to at least bring McCown into camp to keep pushing Griffin and then make sure Griffin is ready to step up in preseason before making a decision either way.

We all know that the Saints will head in the preseason with at least 3 QBs. I guess we'll just have to wait and see, but I liked what i saw from the kid.

I don't know who should be the backup, but the Saints have to pick one. Its idiotic to have three QBs on the active roster. Figure it out boys!
My guess is the Saints will let Griffin and McCown battle it out in preseason.
What's interesting though is that three years ago, I couldn't care less about the backup bc if Drew went down, we were fricked anyway. Now, I think the defense can keep us in some of those games as long as 9 isn't season ending. So a backup is now a valid question again.
