Need Advice on possible boat restoration

My grandma gave me my grandpa's old boat. If I had to guess, it hasn't seen water in 15 years... I'm not mechanically inclined so I would have to get all the outboard work done by someone and the steering cables are also not attached. the interior of the boat seems to be just wood with marine carpet on it so I think I could do most of that work myself.
Im wondering if you guys think its even worth it to start messing with it. The trailer would probably need a couple hundred dollars worth of parts on it between tires, bearings, straps, wood and carpet, winch..
The motor did look clean from what I could tell, but like I said, Im not sure what I'm looking at/for.. Im pretty sure the engine is a 1988.

Of course its worth it. I would love to restore my grandfathers boat. Its nostalgia dog.

Absolute worth it at least it would be to me.
Like you said the boat work would be fairly easy.

For nostalgia sure. Any other reason no.

looks fairly nice!
I'd check with a local motor dealer on if you can get parts for teh motor before you get too deep into it. Maybe worth trying to find another motor and re-power.
Good luck!

That would be a cool project
yeah thats what I'm thinking. Hopefully it won't get too expensive though.
where should I start? tear all the old interior out?
also, since the steering isn't attached anyway, would it be nucking futs to try to convert this thing into a center console?

Sentimental value would be the driving force to spend the kind of money on such a project.
There is nothing wrong with that. It's great actually. Just understand that you could buy a functional used boat for cheaper if all you want is a working boat.

Better check the transom. Likely has rotted wood.

check the transom. if its good then next steps will be to clean/rebuild the carb, likely changing the coils, and before cranking pour some marvel mystery oil in the cylinders.

The question is,"How bad do you want a boat?" not "How much is it gonna cost"?
Cause it will cost.
Looks like a nice hull.

How much would you estimate? I know thats hard to do from pictures, but just trying to get an idea

quote:Depends on how picky you are. I'm no expert but based on what I see, I would guess the carpet needs to be changed ($500.00, if you're lucky); running lights; bilge pump; batteries; trolling motor- I see where his was mounted.

Is steering frozen? May need all that.
Add it up then we can take a look at the motor- carb kit, spark plugs, impellers, fuel lines...
EDIT: Just saw you said the floor was plywood. I thought the carpet was on aluminum so it shouldn't cost as much as I said, IF it's wood he covered and put down.

Yes, yes, yes. Restore that thing. You'll feel really happy knowing that you've fixed the old man's boat.

I don't think it is even attached haha. but yeah It appeared to be plywood with carpet on top, I think I could do that part on my own.
I guess its just hard to pass up a free boat but yeah, I see how cost will add up quickly

Clean it out and wash it and you will feel much better about it.
Motor looks great. I bet for less than a grand you will be fishing--trailer and all.
Grease the bearings on the trailer.
Pour out the gas and put in some new. Hook up a battery and crank it.

I did a quick search and think I found one like that one. GRUMMAN 17' OUTLAW SX. May not be same length though. I'm thinking it's aluminum floor that is carpeted.

yeah that looks like it!
the only difference is that on my grandpa's the whole front deck lifts up (storage and live well) and the seat bracket that mounts to the deck is rotting out, same with the back, so thats why I assumed that was plywood. The actual floor is most likely carpeted aluminum.

Gruman is a very well-made boat.

Well worth the money...Those old Suzuki motors are bulletproof. I have a 40 that has over 3000 hrs and has never been torn into other than regular maint.
