My deer season to say the least has been not so great. Killed a decent buck (mass wise) in ARK and two small does this season. Now to my question.... Around 5:15 this evening the biggest bodied buck (couldn't get a great look at the horns due to lighting and backdrop) stepped out and walked head up looking at me for about 20 yards. He never would turn and stayed right next to the woods. It was getting dark and I finally decided to take a shot at him because I thought at any moment he was going to ease back in the woods. I took a head facing me neck shot but may have shot in his brisket. After shot he went down on his front legs and then got up and ran off. I didn't have any blood, but if the shot hit brisket or chest I may not have an exit. Has anyone had this happen and what's my outlook? With him going down that way after shot was he hit? Will I find this deer? I keep telling myself I hit him and didn't miss.

Sorry for the long story. I didn't look too much as it was dark and he went into a really thick area. Going back in the AM to give it a look. TIA OB.

Get a dog, don't go tramping around and mess up the scent.

Call around for someone with a dog and go back in the morning.

White hair on the ground?

White hair is almost always a long tracking job with no deer at the end. With a good cold night like tonight though, I'd let him lay and go look tomorrow. Depending on the terrain your chances may be good. Thing is, if there's no blood you're relying on luck.

If he hit the ground you have a good chance at recovery, I hop you didn't jump down and immediately go look and push him further away. I'd try to fjnd a dog ASAP or go look in the morning.

He came out at 5:15, he stood still and maybe moved 20 yards in 20 min. The area I was hunting doesn't open up to much light. But the scope does need to be replaced. It was a quick fix because I was letting a guy use my 35 Whelen whose never shot a deer.

Canton, MS - deep in woods right next to a thicket. He stood two feet from the thicket the whole time. I waited a while to get down before taking a look so it was pretty dark when I took my first glance. When I didn't see immediate sign I pulled back and decided to wait until morning.

shite. Can't make that drive tomorrow.

Good luck. The only good thing about looking for deer is that it aint over till you say it's over.

Thanks Cro and downshift. I'm going to give it hell in the morning. I was sick driving home tonight and after reading what oleyeller just said I don't feel to great anymore.

Jwal I took that 8 point earlier this year while he was quartering to me. I put the bullet in him at the base of his neck and never found a drop of blood (no exit). I searched 6 hours in total and found him at the base of a tree in heavy privet 45 yards from the shot.

Take your time, use your grid, and look high and low beginning from the shot point moving in the direction he ran.

If I don't find him it'll be a first for me...bad thing is it was a massive deer body wise. Why couldn't it be any other time, had to call Granddaddy tonight and he kept saying that I hit it and telling me stories of his only miss and the times he found them after shots like I had.

I had a similar shot recently. Hit him as he faced me and he dropped and ran off. Zero blood. Found him next morning about 50 yards away. Still no blood but was able to see much better in daylight. Good luck.
