If he dropped like that you might have hit heart, in which case there won't be much blood, but he can't be far off.

I've not had to take that type of shot before, but I may have to someday. W/ the type of situation you described, your choices are two: 1. Make a "neck shot" by aiming at the base of the white spot on the front of the deer's neck. That's a very demanding shot. 2. Aim at the midline in the lower 1/3 of the chest to make a "heart/lung shot." I don't know what kind of bullet/round you were using, but as long as it was adequate and made it into the heart/lungs, I think there's good chance you'll recover a dead deer. It's unlikely you'll have an exit wound, but he'll probably die peacefully overnight.

I take that shot all the time. Can't lay off of it. I tell myself "no", but in the end myself never listens. I blame on positive reinforcement. Every time I take it there's instant gratification. Dead deer right there. Only shot one that didn't pile up and she ran 30 yards maybe. And there was a lot of blood. Good luck and let us know what happens. Hope you get him.

On second thought a buddy was telling me he shot a doe facing him last weekend. Think he said bullet went in between shoulder and neck and came out the guts. Deer ran a little ways and piled up. Not a lot of blood. Reason I came back to mention it is because he was using a 444.

I agree with those that think he is dead. If he hit ground and is big you probably hit higher than brisket bring as you said no blood or hair. Have tracked a few like this. Look for leaves turned over or disrupted and hopefully he's heading downhill that would be a good sign. Travel slow and look at terrain cause that bullet is probably swallowed up in the body cavity. Good luck I would be expecting white side up when you find see him.

Gut exits usually leave crappy blood trails. When I go track a deer and see no blood but am confident in the person and the shot, it's usually a gut exit or no exit. The dog loves gut shot deer.
White hair and spotty blood is almost always a very bad sign and usually ends in a jumped deer. The problem is people tend to shoot low on hard quartering on shots and just don't hit anything vital, and the brisket/legs don't bleed well at all.

Hope you find him. I tracked a deer for two hours last week and ran out of blood. Was sick about it, but we had to call it due to darkness and our remoteness.

Wounded deer tend to make a big right handed circle. I saw one that ended up 20 yards behind the deer stand it was shot out of.

After my buddy made the same type shot just last week on his 10 pt, I say get a dog in there. He looked w no success, but it only took the dog minutes, and because he had the dog the deer bayed up for a clean finish shot. Good luck!

You killed that deer! Now, dont give up on him. As other's have suggested, get a dog if possible. Look EVERYWHERE. Look very closely using a tight grid. If it's really thick, you may step on him before you find him. No exit wound may result in no blood on the ground.
I killed two on back to back years just how you described. Both were killed on very small plot in a 3 yr old cutover. Absolutely no blood for either, but were both found inside of 50 yards. The first took quite some time. Six buddies and all were convinced I had missed. Refused to give up and ended up actually stepping on his leg (scared the piss out of me). The second was found quickly with a really good dog.
