Looking into getting a security system for our home but I don't know what route I want to go. I don't know if I want to have someone come in and install and then charge me a ton of money to monitor it or if I want to go the self installation route and pay a smaller fee to monitor.

A friend of mine told me to check out SimpliSafe. Self installation and the smallest monitoring fee is $14.99/mo. With that you get it monitored plus there is no contract to lock you in. If you pay $19.99/mo you get that plus sms/email alerts.

Anyone heard of this or use it? Any other recommendations?

I called my insurance company and to have it drop my homeowners I would have to have a monitored system. If I went that route then I would save $84 a year on my homeowners which would be nice.

I don't know about simplisafe, but I hear Dave Ramsey pimping them out on the reg.

We had an incident with a felon targeting my wife (she's a prosecutor) about 2 years ago so I had a professional system put in and have been very happy with it. We got the remote key chain thingy and it's monitor for about $30 a month. It saved us a little on the insurance, but more than anything I got it to make her feel better about coming home to an empty house once in a while.

Simpli Safe is a good basic system that is super easy to install and you can save a ton on the monitoring. great customer service. Missing some of the bells and whistles of the big brands but enough to make someone think twice about kicking your door in and maybe they choose another house with no system at all.

btw i swithched from ADT to SS when my ADT system was hit by lightening and they wanted $175 just to look at it. Loyal customer for 12 years and they wouldn't even throw me a bone.

Who do you use for monitoring? I actually called around yesterday and the quotes I received ranged from $33 per month to $39 per month. I already have a system installed, its just not currently monitored.

Any reason? I am in a rental(just moved to Jackson MS), wife would like one but the rental co. does not seem to motivated. I was looking at the wireless ones at Lowes. Just want to be able to take it with me when we move in a year. Any suggestions?

Im self installing DSC Alexor today. I did a bunch of research and I had to go wireless so I chose Alexor. Im doing keyfobs and basic security now and will be upgrading fire, smoke, carbon monoxide, etc later.

A word of warning... dont just price check the per month monitoring fees. A lot of the companies low ball month to month but nail you on false alarms. Ive been told to expect a few false alarms in the first few months until I can dial in sensativity settings and sensor placements (we own a pet)

I paid for a nicer system up front and the monthly payment is notably lower than most companies (ADT, etc.) who offer the cheap installs up front. You gotta pay em now or pay em later

My only worry about this SimpliSafe deal is how expensive/easy it will be to change the batteries, and how it handles broken windows.

I would think the battery changing would be relatively easy. As far as cost goes, I don't think it would be too high as it's probably something like a watch battery or vehicle remote battery.

From what I've seen it doesn't have the shatter sensors but instead uses the magnets like on doors. But I would imagine that it wouldn't matter too much if you have the motion sensors set in the right place. They could bust a window and get in but the sensor would get them.

My home doesn't have any manual dead bolts so you have to have a key to unlock the dead bolt. They couldn't bust a window out and unlock my door so they would have to come in where I would place a sensor.

I take it you have already reinforced your doors with Door Jamb Armor, rendering their boots harmless?

I don't think that is correct. How much is your insurance/yr?

Yes they could very well kick the door in but a sensor would go in the rooms where doors are so if they come in that way the sensor would pick it up and sound alarm.

I called them this morning so that is straight fromy insurance agent. Homeowners would go from 857/yr to 773/yr with a monitored alarm system.

it uses CR-123A batteries. They are 5 bucks each or so.... simple to change and they last 4 or 5 years.
