Sitting in a bar/restaurant yesterday when I overhear a couple of guys talking about their assault rifles. Discussion pertaining to laser sights, emptying magazines, lighting up watermelons, drawing smiley faces with bullet holes. They were two engineering coworkers so I know they aren't just inbred rednecks.

Do these guys get hard ons daydreaming about having to kill a bad guy following the "apocalypse" and "collapse of capitalism"?

no, have you ever shot guns recreationally? It's a fun hobby that can be applied for hunting, competition shooting, and even self defense. It's a common hobby in rural and suburban populations, especially in "flyover country".

I like their enthusiasm. Shooting as a skill should be looked at as a necessary skill.

It's a hobby. Not that big of a deal.

I don't share the same interest in the hobby that others do but I'm certainly not weirded out by it.
