I thought the same thing when I first got in to this hobby. I went from a chase freedom card with $5k limit and my only non store card to $100k in available credit in 6 months.

I agree. I can spend more in a month than I currently make in a year.
I haven't gotten as far as how I'm going to unload them. I just bought $1000 in gc to finish all of my spends. I figure I'll now look whether just to hold and spend or unload for cash. What do you recommend?

Any recommendations for a card that will best help build my credit score? I'm hoping to buy a house within the next year or two and want to have the best score possible. The card would be used for grocery and fuel purchases and I'm not worried with points as much as I am building my score.

There's no card that gets you a higher score faster. You might as well get rewards while you're doing it.
Find a card that fits your spending and apply for it. I'd get a couple personally. Number of accounts, average age of account and utilization build score along with the obvious.

At this point, the most important thing is getting those applications in ASAP. You are going to want those hard pulls to be as old as possible once you start shopping rates.

Would it make sense to apply for a credit card with the bank that I intend to secure a mortgage with (Navy Federal)? They are currently offering a card that gives you 1.5% cash back on all purchases with no limit. Any other good credit card recommendations for my situation? I want to increase my credit limit as well but have not formally requested for an increase. My current CC is through BOA and the limit seems awfully low considering both me and my wife's income level. Thanks for the responses.

Sounds like a good card for you. Does it have an annual fee? Getting a bunch of cards in a year will not increase your score that much, it will hurt it for a little while. Just get that one and if you really want another one, pick up what's important to you (miles, cash, points).

Doesn't really matter if you get it from the mortgage lender but it does sound like a card that has good benefits for you.

There is no annual fee. I am probably going to apply for the card. Is it typical that you need to request for a credit limit increase on most credit cards or do they offer you a higher limit automatically?

Depends on your history. Some are more inclined to give higher limits and increases. Pentagon FCU comes to mind as one that gives high limits.
