building your own rod

anyone ever build their own rod? blank used, eye kit, handles, etc...
i've been thinking of trying this for sometime now and wondering who else may have.

Your first rod will be an abomination. Don't build it with expensive components. Learning curve is steep. Your third rod will be glorious.

I've made dozens. Just don't do it to save money because you won't unless you build lots of rods. 10-15 years ago, you could save a good bit of money, especially on fly rods. The only ones I have made recently are rods with actions, lengths, components, etc. I couldn't find on the shelf.

I'll share my best tip: when you are flexcoating your wraps, use a hair dryer on the turning blank. The heat thins out the epoxy so the bubbles burst and any excess drips away.

its not cheap and you will have to get a rotator, etc as mentioned earlier the learning curve is steep. The RSFF used to hold workshops on it - unless you want a speacialty rod that you cant find its prolly not worth it. Or if you want a speacialty wrap but it takes time and practice to do that. Blanks I used in the past that are holding up are sage and loomis, fuji guides
