Could Anthony Johnson play defensive end in a 3-4 scheme?

He obviously has trouble with double teams and gets almost no penetration against interior linemen. Anybody think he's quick enough to play end in a 3-4 scheme? Ends in these schemes tend to be more hybrid DE and DT. Might be a fit for him. Thoughts?

If this is his problem, then a 3-4 DE isn't the best place for him. He belongs in a 4-3 defense IMO.

He was almost as bad as Welter this year. He can barely play tackle.

He had plenty of trouble with single teams, forget double teams.

I don't want to see this thread turn into a bashing of the guy, but Johnson did struggle this season. He's a good player, but he needs to stay another year if he wants to improve his draft stock. It hurt that there wasn't much of a rotation on the DL either.

Serious question. Do y'all think there will be a drop off in production next season from the DT spot if A. Johnson left for the NFL?

it has been an epically bad year for lsu at DT, especially when you consider we also had no depth and therefore barely rotated

When I spoke to his HS headcoach last month, he said that the NFL people that have spoken with Anthony told him that they project him as a 3-4 end in the NFL.

I don't know about drop in production but there will be a drop off in number of offsides penalties

Personally, I think Johnson could improve from his performance this year and be a very good SEC DT. He may not be a Brockers or Logan, but he can still be a very good contributor next season. I'm not sure he's in the best place physically. I don't want to see him go because the guys behind him aren't exactly sure things.

AJ has a place on this team. He hasn't lived up to expectations and may have peeked in HS.....this happens quite a bit and is a quirk of recruiting in. That said, I hope he stays to provide depth and maybe expand on his play a bit.

I actually think this team is better with him there. No doubt.

Well I would. Not much depth at DT and he or EGo staying another year would be big.

I think freak struggles being an every down player.I don't know if it's conditioning/work ethic or what. He looks extremely winded in the 3rd-4th quarter noticed the same thing with ego and rasco. When they were fresh big plays happened. It was a rare year and I think that was part of our problem on defense. We are normally at least 8 deep on the d line. We were extremly thin this year and that led to a lot of snaps for our primary guys. Look at auburn there depth and rotation on the d line kept them fresh. We were counting on a lot of highly touted d line recruits last year that just weren't ready for one reason or another. Look at it this way if bain, gilmore, herron and a few others pan out we may see freak and ego live up to the hype if they stay.
