What kind of impact does Greg Gilmore make next year? Other DTs too.

With the possibility of losing Freak & Ego next year to the draft, do you think Gilmore comes in and makes an immediate impact? Who else will have to step up at DT next year?

Bain is raw but I believe athletically, he may have the most upside of the young DT's.

Not at all. He's extremely talented. His problem has been and continues to be can you count on him to hold up physically week in and week out. He's been unavailable for a ton of games in his career.

Thomas slipped my mind. He definitely had some tools. Hopefully he'll put it all together on a more consistent basis.

QT, Bain, Gilmore, Herron (hybrid DE/DT although not sure where he ends up), and Lacouture should be a really nice lineup with more depth than this year. And I'm still not sure about Ego and Freak leaving. Neither really had a decent season and I know Freak and slid down most boards quite a bit. The future is bright though, thats for sure.

My concern is that, given the mediocre play at DT this year, most of these guys did not play. I wonder about their upsides given what the DL did not do and because Les did not at least try some of them.

Hope I am totally wrong on this.

From PT this year, qt and cl were the guys they rotated in. Really with the younger guys its building strength and working on technique. Olinemen are crazy big in the sec.

*clears throat*

I present to you the following cautionary tales to put this in perspective: Drake Nevis, Michael Brockers, Benny Logan, Barkevious Mingo, Josh Downs, Marlon Favorite.

This is a short list of players that received little playing time or even red shirted (like Brockers) and turned into pretty key players at LSU or at least solid contributors.

Of the young DTs, I have heard Bain has the most potential.

CL looked to be the furthest along this year. But ive also heard Bain could end up being the best, and is the best athletically. I believe he was a state champion wrestler in Florida too.

And if Herron moves inside, hopefully he can get it together and break out.

Also dont forget about Gerald Willis III. If we reel him in, he could def move inside to DT and play early on.

But yea I expect to see the most improvement in Bain from now to next year.

I am one of those guys who doesn't know what the heck to expect from the defense any more. I still have faith that the Chief is the best DC in the nation but this year reminded me just how hard it is to play dominant defense consistently.

We LSU fans either enjoyed superb secondary play that allowed the defense to blitz more often and hide deficiencies on the DL or we've had superb DL play that hid any weak links in the secondary. Other than that, we simply had superb play at nearly every position that allowed us to win big nd often without much of any offense at all.

This year, however, we saw what it is usually like for those teams who sometimes get burned when they blitz and get picked apart when they hang back in zones and what not. It's a fine line between having a dominating defense that holds the opponent to 10 pts and that same group of guys getting burned a couple of times and allowing over 30 pts.

All that I am trying to say is that those D Linemen should look a little better next year since the Tigers should be deeper in the secondary for obvious reasons. This will allow us to do some of the aggressive things that we used to do when we had PP7, MC, HB, etc in that secondary and the Chief didn't worry about getting burned no matter who we were playing.

Point well made. But who was playing while these guys developed?

-Josh downs played as freshman

-Bennie Logan redshirted

-josh downs went undrafted and is not in NFL

-Bennie Logan third round pick rookie starter for eagles

-Montgomery, mingo, brockers: all redshirted

Give it time, some players are ready some need to develop. And because they come in ready doesn't mean they haven't already maxed out their potential. A player on the defensive line at LSU should not be judged in any way shape or form by playing time as a freshman. Freak was just as effective as a freshman as he is now.. Ego is 2x the player he was in 2011

Our tackles were the weakest they've been in years, especially depth wise.

But Brick has developed a lot of talent since he's been here. We recruited a stellar class last year on the DL. I think next year will be a struggle on the line(sans Hunter-he's a beast). By the end of the year they might be showing dominance.
