Why did Nintendo name it "Wii U"?

Major mistake right there
The fact Nintendo is having to run commercials addressing "No we will not get you a Wii U, We already have a Wii" shows how badly they screwed up with the name.
Too many people think it is just a small upgrade or peripheral to the Wii and not an entirely new system.
Have also heard stories of parents buying Wii U games at stores expecting it to work on their Wiis.

agreed.
Should have gone with Nintendo Dolphin... always liked that name better than gamecube.

They clearly wanted to build off of the existing brand but I don't think anyone thinks it was a good move at this point.
I'm not sure if true, but I also heard stories of uninformed parents trying to buy just the tablet controller and being confused when they had to buy "another Wii system" with it.
It's cliche but I think Wii 2 might have been a better name (or maybe Super Wii?). Of course, the same confusion might have happened. The Wii brand probably draws in a lot more non-gamers than the other 2 consoles allowing for these types of misunderstandings.

How is calling it Wii U any different than Playstation and Xbox just changing the number suffix for every new console?

It was more than a terrible move.
It should have been Super Wii.

PS, PS2, PS3, PS4 makes it pretty easy to determine the newest.

Xbox
This is different and probably confuses parents but the marketing makes it somewhat obvious which is the newest system.
Wii U did a terrible job in marketing IMO

Was a huge mistake in my opinion. I feel it has affected sales.
Most people thought it was Wii accessory when it first came out. Even after their presentation at E3 most of the experts couldn't tell what it was in the beginning.
The marketing team really screwed up marketing the Wii U.

They should have renamed it completely.
Most people think the wii u is the gamepad accessory.
Its a great system though, the games are starting to roll in and it's the same nintendo quality.

I don't think they anticipated how ignorant the average consumer is.
It should have been named Wii 2 or Super Wii if they thought the Wii name was so important.

Wii / Wii U is marketed more towards casual gamers and kids (usually). They won't be able to tell a difference.
Xbox and PS players are usually more 'in tune' with gaming and they're older so they know what they're talking about or looking for.

Because there are tons of people who don't realize that there's a differene between the Wii and the Wii U. A lot of people think the gamepad is just an add-on to the Wii.

Even after the E3 presentation a shite load of people didn't know what the hell it was.
Pretty crazy they fricked marketing this thing up so much.

Yeah, I re-read it and it is kinda funny.
PS and Xbox games usually will know "oh hey the new _____ came out....the _____one/4".
The Wii (typical) demographic is more likely to be confused by the Wii and Wii U. Especially the purchasers for those units, parents.

I actually don't think the name is THAT bad, much like the end of all the rest of the consoles, it's catchy and it makes sense, mostly.
The problem was the marketing in general combined with the name. They focused on the gamepad FAR too much, and they haven't really marketed it as a "next step," at least until now.
