Youngest son got a kite and we were flying it today. All we had was 300' of string. He asked if we could get it to fly a mile high.

If I got 5300' of mason line what kind of kite would I need to use all the string. The one we have isn't big enough to lift that much weight in string other than hurricane conditions.

Maybe some plans to build one are available.

You would need 10k' of line to get the kite a mile high.

5k' if you just want it a mile from you.

As for kite type, I'm guessing a 8' wing span, a truck and a good wench to reel it in.

Small aircraft fly at 1500' so be careful.

Didn't think of that. Maybe just a few thousand feet of string then. Going to start looking for a bigger kite.

Totally plausible to fly a kite into (outer) space.

You can build a kite from paper mâché amd a wooden frame.

Do it!

You don't need plans. We didn't have any.

Use dowels (wooden) for the frame (tacked together with small nails) then also Google paper mâché.

My father and I built one (during my childhood) and it was as strong as nails.

The edges of the mâché are fragile. Strengthen them with tape.

Our kite flew as far as the spool of string would allow.

Easy stuff.

Good times.

Use an assload of braided fishing line? Would be expensive but light.

Just a thought and likely a stupid thought but I'm trying to help

I also wanted to fly a kite a mile high when I was kid, never did. I would think you are going to need some heavy strength string.

Think Box kite. One getting a lot of lift. Power Pro fishing line.

As a kid, we used to fly in the kite contest every year at City Park in New Orleans. We won a couple times for the biggest flying kite. Last one we built was 18' tall and 12' wide.

Dam shame we lost all the pictures in Katrina.

I used to tie my kite directly to my dad's bottom fishing rig. No idea how much line was on it, but that kite got high.
