The Counselor - What went wrong?

The new Ridley Scott movie opened to just $9M this weekend, one of the worst showings of his career.
It also managed a dismal "D" CinemaScore (which are usually saved for turds such as Movie 43). With an all-star cast, a known director, and Cormac McCarthy writing...seemed like this would be a slam dunk. But it was a complete bomb.
So what went wrong? Some theories...
- Too many adult-themed films at the box office right now (Gravity, Captain Phillips to be more specific).
- Unclear advertising. People didn't know WTF it was about.
- Poor reviews. Currently 35% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Combination of all 3? Other theories?

Who says it's gonna be a great movie just because it has an all-star cast?
Sounds like Scott got lazy on this one.
ETA: I haven't seen the movie, so I know nothing about it. Just speculating on the reason for the failure here.

It looked cool but I had no idea WTF it was about

Probably this.
The trailer isn't very helpful in knowing what the movie is about.
I've noticed this a lot lately for movies. It seems they don't market as much with movie trailers on national TV. I feel like people used to put out trailers almost half a year in a advance and had them constantly playing.
Now I see a trailer like 3 weeks before it comes out and it just has a few action scenes and doesn't explain the movie at all.

This.
I saw the trailers and nothing appealed to me, and it didn't look interesting at all. So either it was bad marketing, or simply not a good movie. Without watching it, I'd guess that it's a bit of both.

Not me. I was just stating that the cast, plus a "name" director, plus Cormac McCarthy penning an original script seemed like a recipe for success. Of course, maybe I'm overestimating McCarthy's popularity in the general public.

One acronym - DVR
At least in my household, almost all commercials get the axe and we hardly ever see the advertisements for movies. If we do see an advertisement, it better blow my socks off.

I know, it was a rhetorical question.
It's frustrating, because I like Scott and McCarthy, but it just seems like a whole lotta lazy going on.

According to Carson, this is a good thing

I saw multiple trailers for it and I was REALLY wanting to see it
Then I read reviews and got turned off
I'm not going to see it strictly because it got bad reviews

Ridley Scott has a severe case of "hit or miss" with his films.
When he hits, like with Alien, Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down, etc., he tends to destroy it.
When he misses, it ends up being a WTF like Black Rain where all the parts are there but you can't help but feel massively disappointed by the end.

Personally, I had no desire to see it because I had no idea wtf it was about.

After Robin Hood, Prometheus and now this, it seems like he's on a "miss" streak

Probably the biggest... I'm a huge McCarthy fan but I have no idea what this movie is about.
