My 13 year old son is flying out next week for a national convention as a school trip. He will be gone a week and will need a good bit of money for meals and spending. Is there something like a prepaid debit card that I can put his spending money on that would be easy to get back if it was lost or stolen? I don't feel comfortable sending him with a large amount of cash because he would be in bad shape if it was lost or stolen. When I was young, traveler's checks were the way to go. They're just so outdated that many places that he would use them at wouldn't even know what they are. Any suggestions? He's not traveling outside the country if that helps.

I'd say just give him the cash but the last time I decided to put 500 euros cash into my wallet it was all gone by the end of the week spent on boozing in Greek discos.

Prepaid cards would limit him but if he lost it there would be some difficulty clawing the money back. I know you can register some of them so maybe that comes with some protections?

Get a PayPal MasterCard. You can put money on it via PayPal and get their customer support if it's lost

I think regions or a few of the other banks offer pre-paid debit cards that offer the same protection as a normal banking card.

Just open a new bank account in his name (your name will have to be on account as well because he is not 18) get him a debit card and be done with it

If I open an account and get him a debit card and it gets lost or stolen, how would I go about getting it replaced and to him quickly so he doesn't do without?

When I was 13 my parents sent me to Houston for 3 days for some school convention with $100. I spent every cent of it the first day doing the bungee jump/swing thing at Astroworld and had to mooch food off people for the rest of the trip and didn't get to do anything else fun. Moral of the story: let him learn his own lessons, he's 13 years old. If you want to play it safe, get him a prepaid card and give a chaperone some extra cash in case he loses it.

Well you could always fed ex him some cash

And like the previous poster said, 13 is a good age to teach responsibility , if he is going with a school group they are not going to let him go hungry or without necessities , maybe fewer candy bars and cokes but would be good learning experience

You mention this several times in your posts...if you feel your kid cannot be responsible enough to manage a credit card, then give him some amount of cash (yeah, I agree with not giving him a large amount of cash) and let an adult chaperone be in charge of a credit card for bigger spends.

Better yet, you volunteer to go as a chaperone and spend some additional time with your son...

This. You can also monitor where the card is used.

You are obviously not ready for him to go on this trip.

As stated above, get him two prepaid cards in the total that you feel comfortable with him needing. I would also give him an extra $100 or so in cash as "just in case" money. Give him an incentive for bringing back the full $100 or whatever the amount is you give him. Hope he has a fun and safe trip!

Seriously. I mean there's got to be a chaperone on this trip. If something drastic happened on this trip where he lost his access to money, I'm sure the adults or his friends on the trip could help out.

Just be sure to activate any cards a couple of days before he goes. A few years ago my daughter went on a school trip and we did the prepaid debit card deal. We forgot to activate until the morning she left and on some cards it takes 24-48 hours to activate. Had to fool with customer service to make sure it was pushed through early. We also told her it only had $500 on it, but we actually put more in case something came up.

For how many days? Get him multiple prepaid Visa's in the amount you want to limit him to per diem. Example-If he's gone 5 days and you want to budget him $50 a day, get 5 $50 prepaid Visa's and have him take one out of his suitcase each day to use. If he loses one there's still x amount back at the hotel.

Might be a stupid idea...just thinking out loud.
