How often is too often to switch jobs?
Ive been out of college for 3 years and I am currently at my second job with an offer to move again. What is your opinion on moving jobs so quickly? In my defense, the first only lasted approx 4 months before a layoff scare so I left.

I wouldn't hire you. 3 jobs in 3 years is a little much. I have had 2 in 11 years

I can tell you some of my lawyer friends are on their third job since 2011.
All were move ups. I guess the way I see it, if there is a better offer and someone gives it to you, you go. If the offers stop, then you probably stay at your current for awhile until they start coming back in again. Its one of those things that work themselves out.

I agree with this.
I stayed at my first job 6 years. I had an offer to leave about a year in for more money, but I didnt think it was a "better" job in the long run so I passed and stayed put. I'm in my current job almost 18 motnhs now and if a job came up that would be a better fit for me or more advantagious for my family, I'd take an offer in a heart beat.

Its two fold... If you can explain the jumps and it is within good reason, then it shouldn't hurt you. However, if a company looks at your resume and sees job hopping that isn't contract, they may pass you over and not give you the chance to explain yourself.
If you take this, I'd make this a permanent job for at least 3yrs.

As long as you keep moving up with the jumps I wouldn't think it's a problem. I stayed at my first job out of school for 10 months, then jumped to a new place for 5 months, then transferred to another area within the same organization and have been here for about 2.5 years.
The last move was a career path change, but was aided by the experience I gained in my first two positions.

If your moving for more money or a promotion most hiring managers will understand that when you explain it to them.

As long as it's for better positions and more money I wouldn't have a problem with it
It would throw up more of a red flag if you stayed at the same job for 10 years.

I'm sure for clarity sake same job doesn't mean same company, but I wanted to throw that in there.

How do these offers usually come about when you are working full-time? Do companies come after people, or are they applying for the positions?

as long as the job titles/responsibilities are moving up each time I wouldn't be worried. If you are moving to the same type of job between companies I think it may raise a flag?

i think it would depend on frequency still - you have to worry about offering someone the next promotion if they are just going to split on you by the time you have them well trained.
theres a balance to be had, even if taking steps up each time.
i know you cant expect loyalty from a company, but a company surely expects some degree of loyalty from you.

Nothing wrong with moving around when your young trying to find your niche. I did it early on and settled into a very high profile job making six figures. I'd have never been as successful as I have become with out that journey. Don't mind the haters. Go chase success.
ETA: if your 40 and are job jumping every 18 months you will def. raise some red flags.

I think when you're young there's nothing inherently wrong with it and it could be a great way to advance quickly. Frankly, you should do a little exploring career-wise right after school.
That said, you do need to "settle down" eventually and plan to stick around for a few years if you can this time. You'll be in the "five years' experience" group pretty soon and employers will want to know you are worth some investment beyond just your salary.
