Lets be honest we've been running alot of 3 man fronts dating back to last year?

With leads squandered against Bama, Clemson, and now Georgia.....and watching playbacks of those collapses....he has gone to the well with this Defense in all 3 of those games more than once.....

If you want pressure, 3 won't cut it~

He is compensating for youth and possible talent deficiancies in the defensive back fiels and dropping 7 or 8 into coverage

It's not working. We'd be better off putting pressure on the QB and taking our chances with man coverage. The youth and experience is the reason for the breakdowns in zone coverage. They simply aren't smart enough to play zone and pick up their assignments.

Chavis is human too. I think it's very possible he didnt expect as big a drop off in talent because he's so used to having nfl talent on the team. Just needs to adjust some schemes for the younger guys

Hard to be aggresive with no pass rush off the end or middle and corners who are having trouble in coverage.

It's the prevent all over again, soft zones with the lb dropping back and hope for dropped passes ? I guess? Sucks! And we should have won at least two of the three. One who cares.

It's real easy for us to sit here and coach sec defense from our phones or computers. The fact is, you have to really trust your corners to bring extra help on the pass rush. I agree he needs to find something that works, since the extra guys in coverage don't seem to help, but I guarantee chavis knows more than anybody on here about his job.

Look this isn't a critque on what Chavis knows about football, but it's pretty freaking easy to see that his choice of D late in ball games has become more thinking, less reacting.

We are allowing WRs to run routes virtually untouched because no one is being called upon to bump at the line.

And it isn't like we have seen this once, the D against the TD @ Georgia was virtually the same D as the 2 mins drives of both halves against Bama!

You can't get DE pressure when you have 5 blockers and 3 pass rushers.......

Compensating for youth doesn't explain Bama in 2012 or Clemson. It seems like we get a lead and he starts playing to not lose, instead of playing to win.

Is CLM making decisions on the def play calling? We have all seen the debacles in a few games in past on offense. I haven't tried to watch to see if he's taking an active role in calls on D lately. Just a thought.

He's not playing prevent, sadly it just looks that way becuase there is no pressure being applied by the front seven. He blitzes but they are not getting to the Quarterback. So what do you do. Blitz and leave suspect corners on islands by themselves? It's pick your posion. Most fans don't get that, they see DBs allowing catches and no pass rush so it's got to be prevent.

Living in TN, can tell you that the Vol fans complained about the same thing with Chief, but mostly about 3rd and long situations where he played it safe keeping everything in front, dropping LBs, instead of attack mode. The problem was. 3rd and 7 became a 9 yd gain and first down.

But in the GA game, this was less the issue. It was blown assignments in the secondary where they were getting BEHIND our secondary all day.

I disagree. If you look at that 4th quarter vs. GA, the corners were playing 10-12 yards off the line, whereas in the 1st 3 quarters, they were up. When you change your scheme and drop back off the line like that, you're in prevent (the "Mustang" package), and you lose the ability to knock the receiver on his arse when he comes off the line, and allow the QB to dump the ball off to receivers unmolested. They did the same against Bama and Clemson last year.

No, true "prevent" is dropping your linebackers and in our case pulling maybe one or two ends, as we play a 4-3 scheme instead of 3-4, to add a DB or LB into coverage and rushing at most 3. Chavis rarely does that. Playing the corners off does not mean prevent. You are still rushing 4-6 to try and pressure the QB. The problem is those 4-6 are not getting pressure and when he plays straight man the corners are giving up a big play. It happened ocasionaly against less potent offenses, and then we ran into a really good one. So them playing off is a function of poor pass rush and poor coverage not "prevent".

And look what that got us! Might work against weaker offensive powers, but definitely somebody isn't connecting the dots versus the Bamas and UGAs of the world.

yes. he also caused the government shutdown, 9/11, and crocs.

i sincerely hope that was a joke.

how much do you hate miles when for years people were sure to separate the defense from miles bc it was successful not giving him any credit at all whatsoever, and now and only now suggesting that he might have something to do with it which all signs point to the fact that he pretty much lets chavis do his thing since day 1.

And why do that when its not working (ALL Game)? To TRY and rush Murray would at least given us a chance to either get him sacked, throw timing off, or not see the open guy due to the rush. That zone (dropping 7-8) was making the WR WIDE arse OPEN!!!

Absolutely this! No sacks! Quarterback has all day to throw and db's leave a zone wide open. Saw it all day.

I'm just saying he(Chavis) has become a bit of a softy as of late.

I think younger corners we've recruited were recruited to play MAN......

And WE DID NOT BLITZ ON THE TD pass we dropped 8 into coverage!
