I don't think he has the raw material to work with that he's had in recent years. We used to have good push with just the 4 linemen.
It looks like he's trying to use a "bend but don't break" style but unfortunately so far, it's bending and breaking.

"It's not working. We'd be better off putting pressure on the QB and taking our chances with man coverage."
I favor this approach, as well, and not because I think it will be some cure-all. What I think it would do is clarify responsibilties so that we would risk having people beaten but at least knowing who they should be covering. As of now, we have no pressure and no coverage - sometimes literally none at all - because of missed assignments. Plus, with some blitzes on early downs, we could improve run defense, as well. Of course, this could also get us burned, but after giving up 44 points and 500 yards, our figurative toast is already pure carbon.

Chavis didn't magically go from greatest DC last year to idiot this year. Why is it so f'n hard to accept that there was a dramatic drop off in talent and depth?? Maybe we could bring back Lou Tepper's bend/don't break defense? The problem with this board is too many posters aren't even old enough to remember Tepper or the 90's. Chavis is working with what he has. We're going to be OK.

I remember Lou Tepper's D, in fact, I was coached by him at Gerry Dinardo football camps from 97-99........
Chavis's two minute scheme since 2012 with experience has failed us!!!!!
I trust Chavis to fix alot of things but 3 times now, 4 if you count both halves of Bama......
Not to mention garbage TDs against A&M etc..
I think we gave up 40% of our points in two minute Defense last year!!!!!

I think Chavis his back to his aggressive ways starting this week. The reason he hasn't been as aggressive is because in the past he knew, if he let up a huge touchdown that could cost them the game due to lack of offense. The offense proved itself against a strong SEC opponent last week, and I think Chavis will start to be a bit less conservative on defense.

We need more stunts, delay blitzes, etc. Right now the opposing team's O-line is taking on our straight-ahead blitz scheme and picking everyone up. We need to disguise what we're doing a little more, make the O-linemen nervous, and we'll have more success in the pass rush.

I know we blitz..........
In the TWO MINUTE DEFENSE, we have rarely done this!

Is CLM making decisions on the def play calling? We have all seen the debacles in a few games in past on offense. I haven't tried to watch to see if he's taking an active role in calls on D lately. Just a thought.
Wow poor CLM can't catch a break no matter what. We finally have an OC and a DC that obviously call their own game and when we lose CLM gets the blame for calling the game. "Come on Man" your statement is just ridiculous.

No pass rush means lose against good teams.

He's not playing prevent, sadly it just looks that way becuase there is no pressure being applied by the front seven. He blitzes but they are not getting to the Quarterback. So what do you do. Blitz and leave suspect corners on islands by themselves? It's pick your posion. Most fans don't get that, they see DBs allowing catches and no pass rush so it's got to be prevent.
This. He is playing the best percentage we have and all you guys asking for man coverage with no rush are crazy.

To the NFL ;with the lock down corners that we often left on islands and ball hawk type players who made great instinctive plays on the ball.

Look I do believe Chavis could do a better job of trying to bring pressure with Blitz's. If we are getting burned in the defensive backfield, why not at least try to make their QB have to react a little quicker. That being said I completely agree with you regarding drop off in talent and depth which I feel is more related to inexperience. When you lose 8 starters on defense there are going to be growing pains. I truly feel we will be fine against all other teams except "Bama & TAMU" because I feel we just have more talent team wise than everyone else so we will win those games. Against Bama & TAMU our defense will have to play better and make some stops. Whether anyone wants to admit it as badly as the defense played at UGA they did get the stop we needed prior to Beckham's muffed punt. That doesn't let them off the hook for the defense in the rest of the game, but they did get a stop that if we score instead of giving the ball back to let them score, it is a totally different ball game.

it damn sure worked against JFF and the aggies last year. and both uga and clemson had qb's that could burn you on the run also so "containment" was the order of the day. however, i think chavis is afraid to be too aggressive and it is justified with our babies in the backfield for the last 2 years. it's kind of a damnedif you do and damned if you don't kind of thing.

That is not necessarily true, it is obvious at this point we do not have the personnel that we have had in years past so creating a pass rush simply means that we are going to have to blitz more. That means our corners and safeties are going to have to get, and play, better period.

But that is the real problem, it is really DAMNED if you don't at least try!!! Look if we start blitzing and we get burned, then at least you tried something different. What we are doing is not working against good offenses, we know we have A&M and Bama that have good offenses.

Defense wasn't the issue against Clemson...not being able to make a first down and protect Mett in the last 5-10 minutes was the issue.
AJ and Bama played the last 1:30 about as well as can be expected in college football, LSU cost them the A&M loss the following week.
Georgia is just a better team top to bottom this year, especially at this point in the season; maybe December could be different.

Chavis has never had an aggressive approach, wtf are you even talking about?
Posted on 10/2/13 at 12:06 pm to PropofoLSU
He has been doing it his whole career if you pay attention. UT dubbed it "third and Chavis".

Zach missing a wide open receiver at the LOS from ten yards away for a first down was the main problem, but the defense letting Clemson drive 80 yards in about 90 seconds cant be over looked as a significant problem too.
