Hi all, I'm craving gumbo and I usually use Tasso when making it. Last time I didn't use any Bc I couldn't find any in the store I went to in Dallas.

1. Does anyone know where I can find it here? I went to Krogers and central market. I've heard that they sell it at central but apparently it has eluded me.

2. If I can't find any Tasso, what is a appropriate substitute?

Thanks in advance. Please help! I'm so homesick!

I don't know if the Cajun Smoke House on Peppermint Lane in Ponder is still open...if so, you can scratch the tasso itch.

Or, mail order it from Cajun Grocer: LINK

Central Market sometimes has it. I've never bought any so can't speak to the quality.

I've always been able to get it at my local HEB. Dallas should have plenty of those.

Damn! Just saw the map. It says there is one, and the review is "IT'S NOT CLOSED"

But that review was 6 months ago. That sucks. Good luck in your search.

I would think there is a tiendita that makes something that is tasso like enough to meet your needs.

I don't use tasso in gumbo, but you should be able to find a decent andouille if you can't find the tasso at Central Market.

A very spicy, smoky sausage will be a fine substitute for tasso. Can you get andouille? It will serve the same purpose as tasso, giving your gumbo a smoky, porky bass note. Smoked ham hocks will also work in a pinch...or for those who avoid pork, smoked turkey wings or necks. (You might have to find a ghetto grocery store to get smoked turkey wings. For some reason, suburban white folks don't understand the magical flavoring properties of smoked turkey wings/necks.)

Thanks guys. I found some at central market. It's behind the deli meat section.. Well you have to ask the guys for it. It's in their fridge. Whopping $13 for a pack... Yes I'm retarded, but I like it in my gumbo

Can't wait to move to Houston so I can visit my family in Louisiana and pick up Cajun ingredients all the time.

Thanks for the suggestions though

Smoked turkey wings are marvelous for flavoring.

Not a big Tasso fan. Too hammy and usually seasoned with chili powder in the mix that I don't care for in some dishes.
