I have made up my mind that I want a new .300 Win Mag rifle. Im gonna be using it for some hunting but mainly long range target shooting. I have been looking at the Weatherby Vanguard series and was wondering what the ODB's thoughts were or if y'all could recomend any others I should look into. Thanks in abvance.

Try one of these. Good enough for Army sniping, good enough for deer hunting, I say.

M-24 in .300 WinMag

It's basically a Remington 700.

These costs a lot less than a Weatherby.

An M24?

I thought they were around $4k

Rem 700 sendero would be my pick for a long range play gun.

I've never had the Vanguard but know a few guys that do, really nice guns and shoot a tight group. I used to have a .300 WM Browning A Bolt.

Vanguard in walnut stock is a sweet looking firearm.

I don't believe an M-24 is for sale to civilians. It's a tweaked Rem 700.

Rem 700s aren't expensive.

We're not still boycotting Remington?

I love my TC Encore, I can buy a new barrel for 200$ and change to any caliber I want rifle or pistol.

and the trigger is very easy and cheap($3 spring and polish the contact areas) to make sweeeeeet!

TC Encore
I don't know the qualities required for a good target rifle but for hunting the encore is nice. Even with 24" barrel it's still a short nimble rifle.

Do you know what a weatherby Vanguard cost?

To the OP the Vanguard is a great rifle for the money. I have one in .257 wby mag. It's a tack driver.

You could also check out a Winchester Model 70. My dad's model 70 in 300 mag has been a great elk gun and is very accurate.

My price range is <1000$. Im mainly going to be hunting deer and hogs(I know a .300 win mag is a little over kill for these) but im also thinking about doing some hunts for larger game like Elk in the future. I already have 30-06 and was just wanting something a little more powerful so a .300 win mag just seemed like a logical step up from there.

Do you reload? Look up the twist rate of your current gun. Search for montanamarine on snipershide. They took the 30-06 and got huge performance out of it quite a few years ago. With heavy bullets the 300 Win Mag just barely outshined it.

For a 300 Win Mag, Id look at the 700 Sendero and 5R, both ar emade in 300 Win Mag. Both are around $1200 though. Those would be my 2 choices.
