My only real concern remains...

that either LSU doesn't have a receiving TE or still doesn't use the TE. I was at the game and really thought Cam would throw a ton to the TEs. Well, I was disappointed...
Posted on 9/2/13 at 7:25 am to mpwilging
i remember the TEs being targeted some...

I really wish LSU had a guy like Lutzenkirchen was for Auburn. That guy routinely killed LSU. Whenever they needed that ONE first down reception or TD reception late in the game, it was usually Lutzenkirchen who got it.

The starter was out, and the TE was thrown at at least once that I remember. As I noted in another thread, an opening game on the road against a ranked opponent isn't the time to be experimenting. I expect we'll see a lot of new wrinkles in the next two games.

Did you notice that our QB and top two WRs were humming most of the night?

Because Beckham and Landry were having crappy games?

It's the first game. Expect the play book to open up more as the season goes on. Also OBJ and Landry got open most of the night. Why do you have to throw to the TE?

Yes, dangling fury (BTW I love that name), but let's just say I miss when we had the TE as a genuine threat as a dump-off option like a lot of teams do...

I remember at least 2 or 3 attempts to the TE's. Good cover on one and pass interference on the others.

Desean Smith had at least two passes thrown his way. One in the redzone in which he was split out wide.

Concerns I have:
1) LSU showed absolutely no imagination on first down. After a while TCU just stacked the box and we sacrificed a down.
2) our red zone offense was terrible. Shoulda coulda woulda put this game away early.
3)signs of clock mismanagement reared its ugly head again.
4) LBers better mature. Did not live up to per game hype.

Okay, let's re-stack them all again:
1) No TE pass catchers

All spot on.

anyone have the run/pass breakdown on firsts?

yep. though some of that is tcu, some of that is missed PIs, and some of that. is LSU being shitty.

no. they managed the clock well at the end of the 1st half. play clock wasnt reset after the time out. cant control a false start. and the refs screwed up the helmet call.

doing fine until boykin came in. then were garbage.

LSU could have scored a touchdown but how can you complain with 3 points. Plus TCU didn't even touch the ball.

Who cares how imaginative they were?...we moved the ball almost every drive. The real concern is red zone offense. The only reason TCU was in the game was this. We converted some redzone scores later...all on 3rd down. If a TE steps up it will help against an aggressive defense, but I'm not concerned with that after one game.
Redzone offense
Lber play
Other receivers contributing
Special teams coverage

My concern here is that LSU became dangerously predictable on first down. We were in the stands calling the plays on first down and if we were doing that I'm sure the TCU coaches were doing it. LSU was being forced into passing situations again. Now- we converted a bunch of them Saturday unlike last year. We are going to play much more physical Ds than TCU.

Tcu's defense is probably the 3rd or 4th best defense we will play. Very smart and aggressive defense. Makes our performance stand out. No way they are better than Bama or Florida, but they are better than the others we will play.
It is frustrating to be that predictable, but I'm not going to complain about anything from that offensive performance. I'll take that all year......that's my point.

I'm going with kick offs. Really wish we could get them deep in the end zone

Red zone playcalling was awful. The bunched formation with a run up the middle just wont work. We kept TCU in the game with our failure to score TDs. We dominated the game statistically but let TCU hang around.
You realize that if Landry doesnt make that great catch and score a TD on third and long, we wouldve kicked a FG to go up by only 6 points with about 6 minutes to play. Thats terrible and if we do that against better teams, we'll have a problem.
