Saints need to do the right thing and cut ties with Will Smith.

Seriously, Will Herring is a better option at olb than Smith.

This situation reminds me of 2011 when they unexpectedly cut Stinchcomb when it was obvious he couldn't do the job anymore.

If Smith makes the 53 man roster, it's going to hurt the team. Period.

He could maybe play the 5 tech (as a backup) with Coleman out, but do we really need him? What would our cap hit be if he is cut?

I watched him as much as possible. All I saw was him chasing the play. Over and over. He just has no speed for OLB.
I just do not understand this at all.

Maybe they needed to see this in a real game in order to make the decision. Kind of like when Williams got to see Jason David in that one preseason game back in 2009.

I wanted to start this thread last night but forgot. It's obvious he can't cut it at OLB.

Perhaps so. CSP and the whole org. loves the guy its plain as day.
They worked out a deal and seem to be giving him ever chance to play in a 3-4.
I'm curious if others saw the same abyismal performance at OLB that I thought I saw?

Horrible coverage skills and he is just too slow to play olb. Tez and gallette need to step it up because if i see smith out on the field too much you better bet opposing offenses are going to be targeting him alot

Yeah he just doesnt have the speed to play the position or the ability to shed a block. Its time to move on.

Make Martez Wilson a starter and put Smith over with the Saintsations.

He is a true def end. Not a Lb if there isn't a spot for him they may have to trade him.

If it weren't for his contract I think he would already be gone...

$8.5 MILLION Dollars to keep him
$7.9 MILLION Dollars to cut him

I could see him cut during the season if he is replaced and gets no reps at all. We know Saints camp is about competition and have seen plenty of higher totem pole players cut. Still, don't think the idea of flushing $8 mil down the drain doesn't come into the equation. If they cut him a 4-3 team could pick him up for nothing, he would give them his annual 6 sacks, and there would be bitchin here.

It's obvious they feel some loyalty to Smith. I think he's the only player left from pre-Sean, he's done everything they've asked, and helped win a SB.

I hope this whole OLB experiment was just giving him every chance to stay on as a professional courtesy to him. The problems is that he's taking important reps from younger guys who need them now when Smith at OLB at best is a 1-year proposition.

Yeah, good point.

I don't see why they thought to put him at OLB instead of 34 DE.

In all honesty, trying Harper out at OLB in this scheme seems less ludicrous than trying out Smith there.

I agree, it's pointless to cut him, but we need to try him on the d-line, not at a backer position. Good thing we have 3 more pre-season games for them to hopefully figure that out.

I'd bet a hundred dollars he won't get cut this season.

Also, frankly, I kinda almost like the idea of Harper playing LB on third downs.
Could rush the passer instead of trying to cover.

I can see it now offensive coord. drooling everytime they see him at OLB and sending in dump off pass play to RB his way everytime he in the game. He looked really out of place last night.

Smith trying to stay with Jamal Charles in the flats was downright ugly last night. Because of his salary, cutting him really isn't an option but he needs to learn to play 3-4 DE or not be on the field at all. He will just be too much of a liability at OLB.
