The NFL must protect its players . However, this is causing the game to look nothing like it did 10-20 years ago. But I understand the changes must happen, less a player is killed on the field when two people collide at a full on sprint.

They automatically review ejections.
(Hopefully) It'd get overturned, but man, that would be a shame. I almost feel bad for the officials having to make these calls

If you get to the point where you say "that kind of hitting should be against the rules" then you might as well just be honest with yourself and say modern football needs to go.

I tend to agree... what would we have Clowney do?... lower his head even more and risk his own safety so that he avoids incidental contact with the RBs helmet?

Clowney put his facemask in the dude's jersey with both feet on the ground... that should not be illegal.

Dudes head was up, he wrapped up and drove through the tackle. You can't penalize the guy for being blessed with size and strength. If that is illegal you have to scrap tackle football.

yeah, the rules kind of contradict themselves.

that was a perfect tackle.

Yup. It's become a penalty to hit someone too hard

Ha, of course the ACC officials would've ejected him. Our referees are dogshit.

The whole "targeting" rule is an absolute joke. I don't think anyone is ever targeting for someone's head, just the natural motions of the game cause helmets to hit. Should it be a penalty? Yes, but to eject someone is a joke.

So when an offensive player puts his head down to brace for a hit, should the defender just go for the ball carrier's legs and tear an ACL or two? I mean he is looking out for his best interests and wouldn't want to get ejected if he was aiming for the guy's chest which now is the crown of his helmet

If the Clowney hit seriously would get him ejected, then they need to scrap football altogether

Yep. Hitting with the face, and not the crown of the head, is how players are taught to tackle.

I agree. If that hit is banned, you aren't playing what we recognize as football. You would be in the area of arm tackling and pushing people out of bounds. Arm tackling doesn't work all too well when grown men are wearing pads. You'd actually be better off putting a flag on them at that point, to at least give the defense a chance to stop the O.

do you even remember what football was like 20 years ago?

fierce over the middle hits on WRs were the norm, QBs would get lit up all the time, you could get an onside kick after once bounce, there were trick plays like the fumblerooski, you could actually touch the center on special teams plays, incidental helmet contact was no big deal, crack back blocks were a-ok...

all of that is gone due to rules based on safety.

There is nothing fundamentally different with the game from 20 years ago.

You still block and tackle.
