Fishing near Elmer's Island

Hey OB, I'm going to a birthday party that will be at Elmer's Island. I'm told there's some areas around it where you can catch fish.
The only issue - I haven't been fishing down there since I was 12 so I've forgotten salt/brackish water technique and bait.
What I remember is popper corks with carolina rigs. Sometimes using croakers. Sometimes shrimp. Is that still good? I can remember gray plastic grubs being my go-to.
Anyway, if my memory is right the next question is what's a good bait shop down there?

Carolina rigs or under a cork. Ive had good results lately with croakers and topwater plugs. Shrimpmstill work too.
Coastal bait shop is on your left just before the elmers island turnoff. Its the first building when the camps start on your left side. Nice folks.

Yes Ive seen it many times. Few weeks ago I saw a guy in a truck riding through the surf pull people on skim boards.
birthday party on Elmers
To the op I would bring a surf fishing set up. Tackle you would normally use for trout fishing with a floating basket to throw your catch in. Live shrimp is the best but a PITA plus you can catch hardheads. Another PITA. I use either top water or soft plastic. Vudu shrimp is my go to now.

Yeah, just a beach trip really. We were down there for the fourth, saw a few water spouts. Was a good time.

Look at the July issue of Louisiana Sportsman Magazine at the article on page 40. That guy has a rig that is lights out better than any Carolina rig. Can go from bottom to cork fish in less than a snap. It works unbelievably well.

DOA or Vodoo Shrimp under a popping cork, next best thing to live bait. And watch for sharks, they are lurking.

Friend of mine owns Costal Bait mentioned earlier. Best Price and if they don't have bait no one else will.

Why don't they allow crabbing on Elmers anymore?

I think it has to do something with the oil spill......but not sure why they would allow it on Grand Isle and not Elmers.

Grand Terre is closed also, to everything but rod and reel fishing from boat. I thought it was because of the littering, but it may be oil. And when did they shut it down to weekends only?

I was wondering about that. Maybe too many chicken neck packages.
