God yes. I'd say it's a clear reference to them. One of my favorite movies, so the reference made me happy.

After watching the first season and the beginning of this one I just really dont like Korra. She is a selfish count.

This is making it impossible for me to enjoy this season. The original show with Aang was freaking awesome. Season one with Korra wasn't bad, but the fact that she is still such a count is ruining it for me. I cannot root for her at all and thus the show has become unbearable to me. I actually turned the second to last episode off about halfway through and lacking any desire to finish. I'll check in on this thread to see if the series improves. I'll probably wait until the end of the season to see if the ending makes it worth it.

Korra wasn't in the last episode if you were curious.

The idea of the Avatar in this world they created is awesome and the primary reason I watch the show. I don't really care about the other characters outside of Aang's progeny to be honest. I just enjoy seeing a badass Avatar, but not when she is a complete waste of space.

I have a feeling this season will serve to give Korra some humility. At least I hope it will.

Hell of a fricking episode. One of the best of either series, and perfect origin story for the Avatar. Finally an origin done right, unlike some series. They didn't overly explain it and just told us the things we needed to know.

First off the animation was pretty damn incredible in this episode. Definitely came off as an ancient Miyazaki piece, and there were definitely alot of references to Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke in this episode.

Really liked that humans came from the Lion Turtles, and that the final fight between Wan and Vatu mirrored Aang's and Ozai's final battle. Wan was a good character, and when he's dying at the end, you really feel for him, since he himself ultimately failed, but was able to live on in other lives to continue his work.

Unalaq is definitely serving and being manipulated by Vatu. If I had to guess what's going to happen in the finale, Vatu has already gifted Unalaq the gift of manipulating all four elements and has become the Anti-Avatar. Really looking forward to the showdown, and really don't have much of a hint besides that on how the season is going to end.

Also, did anyone else think the female Fire Sage may have been Azula?

Yeah, the face spirits were a pretty cool homage.

It was a very well done origin story, and great double episode all around.

This two part episode was the best of the entire Avatar series.

Simply amazing.

I got chills and was in awe the whole time. I was gripping my leg really tight because it was so glorious. Seriously.

I'm still in debate if it was the best episode of either series. Certainly the best animated, without question, and they really outdid themselves on the environments. Good to have Studio Mir back, because the other studio animated the first half of the season, and they needed a new studio to help out with the non-Spirit World things going on this season, and its not quite as good. Think about how big of a pain in the arse it was to animate the backgrounds, Rava, and Vatu. Just gloriously well done, and the best told origin story I can think of.

I'm not sure if it was the best of both series but it's easily the best episode of Korra and it's close to the best period. I would have been happy with a mini-season of episodes about Wan to bridge between books one and two.

Yeah Wan was an awesome character. Fits perfectly as the 1st Avatar. He made me actually care about him unlike Korra....bitch

Wanted to come in here and post all of this. Loved the backgrounds in the style of a Chinese/Japanese watercolor or woodblock painting. Definitely also the Mononoke/Forest Spirit homage.

Forgive me for being terrible with names, but this whole flashback to how the original avatar became so really made me realize how much I don't like Korra. She's emotional as shite and always fighting or bitching about someone. She's just really unlikable at this point. Made me realize how much better Avatars are in male form.

I'm also drawing parallels between women holding the power of Avatar and having the right to vote.
Should have neither as they just frick shite up.

Lol I'm with you man. Aang and Wan show exactly what an Avatar should be. Completely selfless and wise and willing to do anything for others.

Then we get Korra over here who is a complete selfish count who acts on impulse and pretty much consistently does the wrong thing.

But I think that's the point. They couldn't keep making seasons with Avatars that are completely the same, so instead they made a complete polar opposite.

I think after these two episodes of her seeing what happened and understanding the spirits she will begin to grow and become more mature and wise as the past avatars.

shite's about to get real though! Her uncle is obviously being manipulated by the bad spirits and is trying to open both gates to the spirit world so he can try and free chaos "Vatu" or whatever his name is.

Say what? When did this happen?

Hopefully through seeing how Wan did things, she will straighten her shite out. I'm with you on being frustrated with Korra, but I liked her and her progression last season. What frustrates me is that Korra apparently hasn't learned a damn thing from facing Amon, and it probably would have done her some good to have lost her powers while she mastered airbending.

Really think they made a big mistake with that and should have given her powers back at the end of this season instead. If Korra was acting like this immediately after losing her powers, it would be a bit more understandable, but it just seems they just did a complete character reset on her. Also think how much higher the stakes would be if Korra merely had her airbending and spirit to overcome Satan and maybe an Anti-Avatar. I just never thought I'd be siding with Mako over Korra, but they've done it (and they've done much better with his character this season).
