I have some friends coming to town for the first time and I am trying to find cool places to take them for dinner and drinks.

Something other than The Chimes...I like the Chimes but their band is playing at the Varsity so we will end up eating there anyway. I'm looking for a place to take them the night before that is yummy, affordable and has a local flair. I don't want something TOO similar to the Chimes because they're only in for 2 nights and I'd like a little variety.

Also, they love dive bars, and don't love crowds...we will be out on a Wednesday night and are all in our late 20s/early 30s. Any cool bars that fit those criteria? Preferably close to the campus area since that's where our accommodations are.

I haven't lived in BR for over 7 years and I know a lot has changed since then, so any suggestions are appreciated

Thought about Chelsea's...I haven't been to the new location. Food as good as the original? I always liked that place.

And not Lucy's...we have one here and the food is mediocre at best, and I have issues with management, so I'd rather spend my money somewhere else :)

Are any of the bars in the overpass area worth a shite? Also, do most bars still allow smoking inside? Not psyched about that but I'm thinking if we try to hit up some dirtier bars that's going to be something we have to deal with.

Thanks for the help, y'all.

I would say anywhere under the overpass would be a good start...and you'll have options within walking distance that won't have that "downtown" vibe

Chelseas is the only non-smoking under overpass I believe, maybe Ivars? Unless you hit up the food places like Schlitz and giggles and Zippys.

Quite a few non-smoking bars downtown. Bald Eagle Pub(used to be Thirsty tiger), 3rd street pub, Mud and Water(little closer to campus), etc

Radio Bar fairly close to campus and is non smoking, and since you live in Austin you are used to hipsters

The Cove or Radio Bar for drinks. Chelsea's is a good choice for food.

Port Royal is one of the most divey bars in BR. But it gets crowded on Wednesdays because of trivia, but the crowd usually thins out around 10-1030 when it ends.

I endorse the idea of drinking at Port Royal or Radio Bar.
As far as places with food and drink that are nearish to LSU, what about Pastime? Food there is pretty good. And that place is old.
I like the food at The Bulldog and they have a good beer selection. But that place can get bad with smoke.
Don't bother with Ivar's. That place is a dump in the worst sort of way. You'll get ripped off for drinks, the food is average and the service sucks. I'm not much of a fan of Schlittz & Giggles, but the drinks are cheap as hell.
