Good summertime topic IMHO, and just my thoughts, but have to think these are among the best football players who were all around athletes and could or did have careers in other sports at a high level.

80's Eric Martin- besides being 11 year NFL and all pro (stats better than some WR's in HOF from 70-80's) he was also an amazing Basketball player and Dale wanted him to play both but Stovall said no. Underrated blocker in NFL too. Also big on NFL golf circuit for awhile.

90's Todd Kinchen, great return man an exciting receiver, also a pro tennis player had he wanted to be. Heard he can play golf really well and ran some track.

2000's- Matt Mauck, had four years on NFL rosters after 03 NC and also played AA baseball before LSU as we all know. Heard he could kick FG's out to 40 yards and was/is 5ish handicap golfer.

Love to hear more, maybe from 70's and before

Spears and Clayton both could of played basketball at LSU. Ronald Martin was on the basketball team his freshman year.

Chad Jones and Jared Mitchell won national championships in both football and baseball.

Im sure Patrick Peterson could of done track or something.

Holiday.

I played HS ball with Kinchen and will attest to his freakish explosiveness and versatility. He led Dunham (Chapel Trafton) to State titles in baseball and basketball and won a tennis title to boot. Watching him jump boxes like a human slinky as a workout was mind-blowing. I always used to think he would have been the best lacrosse player EVER had he been born in New England.

Not sure if Ben McDonald ever tried out for football, but I know he excelled in baseball and football.

Ditto Lyle Mouton.

He was a decent bench player in basketball for a couple of years.

I would not really say he "excelled."

with Kinchen

His brother Brian was a scratch golfer and could hit the ball 300+. Also one of the coolest football stories about him is:

quote:

A journeyman tight end and center, he was cut in 2000 after 13 years, including three seasons with the Ravens (1996-1998). Kinchen was teaching seventh grade at a Christian school in 2003 when New England called late in the season. All of the team's long snappers were injured; could Kinchen still hike the ball with oomph?

He could.

Five weeks later, Kinchen delivered a perfect snap as the Patriots' Adam Vinatieri kicked a last-ditch 41-yard field goal to win the Super Bowl against the Carolina Panthers - the club that had released Kinchen.

Steve Van Buren was a hoss, athletically

Cannon and Taylor were beasts who could do anything, athletically, for men of their size. Cannon particularly, as he was an all conference track and field performer

Casanova, ditto, although not as strong, probably the best brain/body combo in LSU football history.

90s Eddie Kennison and Kevin Faulk.

00s Bennie Brazell - made Olympic team as a hurdler - now coaches sprints and hurdles at LSU.

More recently, Patrick Peterson - just incredible combination of size, speed, strength and agility.

One of the most "underrated" IMO.....Chris Jackson

One of the best all-around athletes on the LSU campus ... Handles both the punting and placekicking duties for the LSU football team and is also a member of the LSU baseball team ... Sat out the 2006 baseball season after undergoing Tommy John surgery ... Started at third base for the Tigers in 2005 ... Three-year starter as a punter and placekicker for the Tigers .... Ranked among the school’s all-time leaders in punter and field goals ... Finished career ranked No. 5 in school history in career punting average (41.0) ... Ranked seventh in school history in both career field goals attempted (44) and career field goals made (26) ... His career field goal percentage of .569 ranks as the 10th best in LSU history ... Also a member of the LSU baseball team where he serves as a starting infielder.

Have you read his book? It's pretty solid.

I remember when Kinchen suited up for basketball for a couple of games -- it was back when that chicken pox outbreak hit the team, I believe.

I know he was good in high school, but he looked really fricking awkward out there, from what I remember.

Mitchell is very athletic, but he didn't really contribute much in football.

Jones started football, and his pitching talent seemed to come out of nowhere.

Todd Kinchen could have played basketball anywhere.
He kind of got thrown to the wolves at LSU, and had ball handling issues, lots of turnovers. Had he concentrated on it, committed himself to it, he had Rex Chapman -like skills.

Jared Mitchell was unreal. his football skills were so nasty he just gave up on football for baseball really. dude could throw a dart 60 yards with either hand. I saw it first hand.

He use to make some unreal catches in practice then just dick around for the rest of it.
