He kind of got thrown to the wolves at LSU, and had ball handling issues, lots of turnovers. Had he concentrated on it, committed himself to it, he had Rex Chapman -like skills.
Yeah, I wasn't really knocking his skills, as I actually saw him play in high school, and remember him being quite good. It was meant as more to a point as to how hard it is for even a great athlete to get thrown in out of the blue at the college level of a sport he hadn't played in a couple of years. I have a recollection of him just throwing up a couple of bricks, and fouling someone like a free safety in the open field.
I have no doubt he would have been a decent college baller, if he had concentrated on that. But, Rex Chapman-like, I don't know.

Guys, it would be really hard to top Todd Kinchen as far as all-around athleticism is concerned.
Another name the old guys throw around a lot is Mike Miley. He should be in the discussion, too.
*sorry... forgot the 80's to 00's qualifier. So Miley is out.

Kinchen was an outstanding athlete and probably could have played college basketball, but he was only about 6'0" or so and not really a PG. So, I think "Chapman-like" is quite a stretch given their size difference. An amazing athlete, though. So explosive.

Twice drafted in first round by MLB the only LSU player to do so.....

Jones started football, and his pitching talent seemed to come out of nowhere.
He was very good before he left Nola

Robert Royal was on the basketball team one year I remember. Clayton and Spears should have played.

Not sure if Ben McDonald ever tried out for football, but I know he excelled in baseball and football. Ditto Lyle Mouton.
McDonald was the punter on his HS team.
I'll add Benny Brazell's name. After LSU he played high level Rugby.

But the best all around athlete wasn't a football player...

Mike Miley was going to be the starting shortstop for the California Angels, and I believe he could have started in the NFL as a quarterback. He was a terrific high school basketball player, and all state high jumper. By the way, Mike was a switch hitter with power.

Chris Carrier. Played Safety, was long snapper and when the basketball team was decimated with injuries, chicken pox and grades in 1986 he stepped in as a reserve. Last time I saw him he looked like he could still play.

“Ben might be the best overall athlete who ever came through LSU athletic program,” Bertman said. “After two years in basketball he came to baseball full time. In high school, he was naturally in three sports, and for someone to play two sports at such a high level tells a lot about his athletic ability. Ben was a good player for Dale, but baseball was his best sport.
All state basketball and baseball, all district football
