Yes. Should be.

That doesn't make sense to me either. I do not have the dual reading refractometer, just the Brix side. And my simple math conversion is Brix x 4.4 gives me a decent estimation of the SG. Based on his two photos the Brix reading and the hydrometer are basically the same at 1039.6/1040. However his SG reading on the refractometer is way off.

I'm open to interpretations.
This is my understanding of the problem.
quote:
Gravity to Brix Accuracy Typical dual scale refractometers use a linear 4 x gravity to Brix conversion. That’s fine and dandy up until around 1.049. At that point this linear scale starts to become inaccurate. Brix 11 does equal 1.044, but Brix 12 does not equal 1.048. It is 1.049. It’s only 1 point off here, but up at Brix 24, it’s up to 5 points off. Brix 24 equals 1.101 not 1.096.
This is my understanding of the problem.

I knew that it became inaccurate as the number grew but that for most of my beers it is close enough for me.

I was always under the impression that refractometer's were fairly easy to read. Didn't realize there were factors to consider.
I need to get one of these, because i believe my hydrometer readings are skewed.
For instance, a couple homebrews ago, as i finished up my boil, i took my thief and grabbed a sample. Added my hydrometer, got a reading and wrote it down. I then took my hydrometer and put it directly in my brew kettle and took a reading. The 2 were off pretty significantly. I don't remember the exact OG's but i think the OG in the hydrometer was around 1.058 and the reading from the brew kettle was 1.052/050 (adjusted for temperature). So for some reason, my densities were different from the thief to the brew kettle. My only thought was that maybe, some of the trub got gathered up in the thief, making the wort in the thief more dense.
Which made me think, i need a refractometer.

unless it was dissolved into the liquid that shouldn't make a difference.

man, I really fell asleep on my brew schedule. I had no idea that my keg of pliny clone was so low until it kicked last night. It was still drinking pretty good for 3 month old DIPA. The nose had faded a bit but it still tasted really good to me.
So, now I have a package from AHS coming today with the stuff to make the sour base, and need to brew something else to put in the keg, probably the Fortunate Islands clone. Would have been nice to save the second shipping cost and ordered both together.

What is a reasonable price for a 5 gallon keg?

Ball Lock - 50-60
Pin Lock - 35-45

Your brix refract is correct and the calculation you use should be correct as well. I can't depend on my non-corrected scale SG conversion. Pretty sure my hydrometer is worthless. What's the best post-fermentation refractometer calculator?

The one on my computer is from MoreBeer, but i havent used it in a long time.

I use brewzor calculator app (android)... the app is ugly as hell, but it was free and works.

kegged my petite sour this morning.. Kettle soured a berliner base, fermented with WLP644 - Brett Trois, and aged on blackberries.
This was my first time using WLP644 and it turned out great. The beer picked up a TON of flavor and color from the blackberries and the brett was a breast and continued fermenting strong until it drove the pH to around 3.1.
Only unfortunate thing was that WLP644 vials only have 3 billion active cells. To build up from 3 billon cells to Chad Yakobson's recommend pitching rate (between ale and lager) took three steps. If I did this again I'd spend the money to ship in some Omega Labs Brett Trois blend that starts with 150 billion cells and save myself some time.

Wow, that's a great price...

blackberries and blueberries sure do make a nice looking beer.

I know. I'm really considering picking a couple up.
