25 year-old’s Company Makes Millions On Cracked iPhones

quote:

Millions of clumsy cellphone users have been in the situation shown in this video: One minute your iPhone’s in your hand, the next it has hit the floor and cracked! That’s where 25-year-old A.J. Forsythe comes in with a simple idea: iPhone doctors who make house calls.

Forsythe co-founded iCracked, a start-up that with a team of repair people who specialize in cracked screens.
“We’re an on-demand group of individuals that no matter where you are, you can press a button and we’ll dispatch a group of iTechs to you in real-time,” he said.

The company has raised $700,000 from Y-Combinator, SV Angel and other investors. It is moving into another round of financing and hopes to raise $5,000,000.

A spokesperson for iCracked said revenue for 2012 was $2MM and this year the company says it expects to ‘crack’ $10MM. The company’s co-founders, recently made Inc. Magazine’s 30 Under 30 list.

At least they're quick about fricking their clients... Unlike apple.

Pricing for the service varies based on the damage and model of phone. iTechs can set their own prices, but typically, fixing a cracked screen on an iPhone 5 costs from $190 to $220.

Maybe the screen part is more expensive on the 5, but I got my 4s screen repaired for $90 at one of the MANY iPhone repair places around town. Why is this article worthy?

My roomate fixes Iphone5 screens and said they are much more expensive than the older generations. Honestly the best thing to do would be take it to an apple store give them 200 and they give you a refurbished phone.

The newer one's are always more expensive. you can get a 4S screen now for like $30, but was closer to $175 when it came out.

Jesus, so people are willing to pay this just for the convenience of having them come to you? Kudos to the guy making the company, but I'd rather just go pay $200 for a new phone if I was shelling it out anyway

Refurbed maybe, but not a NEW 5

But, if you could have a guy show up at your door or in your office and fix your phone for less than the cost of you driving somewhere and handling it FOR MORE and on your free time, you wouldn't like that service?

I call BS!

I ordered a new screen for my iphone 4 for like $26 shipped off of amazon and fixed it myself. Not sure how the 5s are. Its not rocket science.

What I don't get is why the Apple stores won't do it for you. They could charge whatever they wanted and people would pay the premium because its being done at the Apple store.

I have dropped my phone so many times with no cracks. I am shocked at how well my cheap $3 case protects it.

This guy's business model is unsustainable. Apple and can easily change its policy when this becomes a big enough thread and Gorilla Glass 3 is rolling out in phones soon.
