Cuban Sandwich Night

This morning I noticed we still had some thin sliced pork loin left in the fridge from the other day. I thought about it, and it didn't take long at all for me to figure out what to do with it. All I needed was some sliced ham, Swiss cheese and a loaf of good French bread. That should actually give away the answer to "What's for dinner tonight?" Cuban sandwich! It had been a while since I had one so that's what it would be.
They're not difficult to make at all but I'd bet few make them at home much.
First the yellow mustard(I actually mixed mustard and mayo together and put some of that on the top slice of bread), sliced dill pickles and the Swiss cheese. Then on the other half the ham(Columbus Black Forest)and sliced pork. Put the two halves together and place on a hot buttered griddle and put something heavy on top to squish it down.
I used a 9 x 13 cast iron pan. Worked perfectly!
Done!
As a side(no pictures)I had refried black beans and tortilla chips.
Not bad at all!!!

looks good. I've never tried to make one. Theres a place in Natchitoches that makes (IMO) a legit Cuban sammich. Cane River Bar and Grill.

That looks so damn good.
Final product reminds me of Am Mart sandwich. Which is not a bad thing.

His rant on this subject was always great and very much like Rohan.
First he would start with the fact it was a failure before it started with french bread. Outside of Tampa, Cuba or some little old lady in the hood of NO, you weren't eating a cuban if you didn't have their bread.
Also, using a cast iron pan to press it? Not even a panini press will do. You must use the right kind of press and there isn't one in BR.
I don't remember all the details, but it was great. That being said, I would certainly eat that.

I like to mix the mustard 50/50 with margarine. I read that somewhere and it works great.
If you don't want to make your own, Churro's Cafe on Kingman (behind Clearview Mall) in Metairie makes a good one. I find if you let them sit about 10-15 minutes they taste better. I guess it's the juices melding.

I sincerely pity people who go through life like this.
ETA: Would steal OP's sandwich and eat it.

Have lived in Tampa for 26 years now. Married a Cuban girl and "The Cuban" comes in around 4th or 5th on my latin sandwich list.
Ropa Vieja with swiss from West Tampa
Media Noche' from Brocato's (with a take home devilled crab)
Tripleta from Tico Marisol
Palomia Frita from Aguila's
Then a Cuban from West Tampa or Tico
HOWEVER, that's a Damn tasty looking sammich my friend!

I sure wish I had another Cuban sandwich right now. It was as good as I've gotten at a local Cuban grocery where they make 'em.
