Inshore charter trip, do you bring your rod/reel or use the ones provided?

I haven't been on a paid trip in a while. What's the etiquette? Previous trips I used the guides but they always had spin cast and I've really gotten used to my bait cast. I just don't want to look like a fool showing up with a pole!

I usually use their shite.

If you have a nice rod that you like, bring it. Guides use spinners because they often bring people whose fishing experiences center around 33s. Also, that's one less person he has to worry about busting one of his rods.
Also remember that you're paying him.

I use theirs. Less stuff for me to pack.

I know this argument has been on here before and can't remember which way the majority fishes but I just can't reel with my left hand and it seems every charter boat has all theirs set up the opposite I just hate to start switching his shite up

I always bring my own rods and tackle. Your paying them to take you fishing how you want to fish. Nothing I hate more than going on a charter who has cheap worn out gear and crappy tackle!

Use his tackle. He is out there almost every day, so he is going to know what they're hungry for. Also, better to lose his baits. You're already paying for them.

No doubt, but I'm not kidding that I went on a charter last month where guide didn't have anything to make leaders, all the hooks were rusted, didn't have any plastics, etc. Usually don't bring all my gear but at least just bring a small box with the basics just in case.

Trip was free so didn't complain much, would have lost my shite if I were footing the bill though!

Hijack,
What is the appropriate tip on a trip like this? I'm looking at a 4 hour inshore trip for 3 that cost $350. What should we tip? Thanks.

Use theirs...it's rigged the way they like.

I always use theirs. Much easier that way. I usually hook a shark at some point that strips all the line off anyways. The guide would hand me his fishing pole to fish with while he puts new line on mine.

I always use their rods, tackle, and bait.
but once I brought a bag of plastics I wanted to try on a bass trip though, they actually worked well and the guide was impressed and a little surprised

I bring my own casting rods, but ask the guide if it is ok to bring my own equipment. On one trip fishing out of Hopedale, I had my own rod rigged with double plastics. We got into school trout under the gulls, and I was hammering the fish while others on the boat were having to re-bait with shrimp after each fish.

Sucks to be a live bait fisherman I guess.
I always tell people, if they have a favorite trout rod, bring it. The rest of the stuff he should have, but I've been on some trips where they didn't have shite and we used my bag instead. I bring all my stuff and my GPS, I hate wasting a day with a fricked up guide.
