Personal Bourbon Barrels

A buddy of mine bought two. One small one that held a little over a liter I believe and one that was pretty massive. He loves the things. He ages crown in them for two weeks at a time. For the life of me I can't find the website but I'll see if I can locate it.

So the idea is you buy already bottled bourbon and age it further? I've never heard of this...

Yeah, some people just buy it to store the liquor in for parties or for looks. I think he told me that two weeks of aging turns a regular bottle of crown closer to the taste of Crown reserve (small liter barrel that is). I don't know about all that but he loves his. His name is burnt into the side. The website shows some examples. Pretty cool gift ideas in the liter sizes.

Add any dark spirit or red wine to the oak aging barrel. Let it age to acquired taste. This may be a few days, weeks or months so you should taste test it often, but the smaller barrels age faster because of the increased surface area to volume ratio. That sounds like snake oil. Though it might be cool to have on display.

I think it's more of a conversation piece but she really likes making infusions & tinctures so I figured I would get her a 3L barrel to experiment with. You can manipulate the flavor of a cheaper whiskey by adding spices & or herbs. Or try aging a cheap sherry then add a bourbon (after removing the sherry) to impart some residual sherry flavors left in the barrel. The possibilities are endless. Thanks for the feed back gents!

Buddy of mine bought a barrel with some of his fellow agents. He has brought me two bottles over the course of a year and it was Awesome! I like Basil, Blanton's and Woodford. The cask they bought was better than all three FWIW - I hear every cask tastes a little different
