Wheat straw will keep algae down in a pond. Not sure if any other benefits.

Edit- or I think it's wheat straw that is used. I know it ain't regular grass hay.

So far I have guessed at the decay changing ph, food source for bait, water filtration, drunk hay balers.......

hellifino seems pretty good summation

It's barley straw that is used for algae control.

Just to correct my earlier wrong post.

The thought ia they give crawfish food they also REALLY lower DO concentrations which hurts you more than its worth

Settle down dude.

He posted a question that I would have never thought about seeing as we don't have any crawfish ponds up here. I love seeing stuff like this.

ok, that makes sense.

Control algae growth, which is why you see em pop up later in the year. And not necessarily beneficial which may be why you don't see them in every pond or even the majority.

thanks

I think the decomposing releases a chemical that is a algaecide. Of course anything decomposing will take up oxygen which may have some effect also.

Not very effective from my experiences. You really need to kill all the algae first and it takes plenty of bales per acre foot of water to do any good.

really effective when you are trying to promote a breeding environment in the pond. All the fish and snakes and turtles swimming around going "Hay"
