If it's not in your state of residence, you may have to get it transferred into your home state to fill out the form and such.

OP.

Shoot it and become comfortable with the pistol.

Try different types of HD ammo to make sure the pistol likes it.

When you purchase a gun at an FFL (federal firearms licensed dealer) you have to fill out a form 4473. It isn't registration or anything but it's basically a temporary contract that you are the one buying the gun.

You can purchase long guns in neighboring states (states touching your state of residence) but I don't think you can buy a handgun out of your state of residence. I could be wrong but I think that's how it works.

So if you can't buy it in MS and you find it there, get them to send it to a dealer in LA and pay their transfer fee, which is usually between 20-30 bucks.

Hope this helped you out...

re: So I have finally settled on a Smith and Wesson M&P for my first hand gun

so i did a lot of research, and i think the regular M&P will be just fine for what i need, i dont need a 5 inch barrel and a 4.25 will be just right. but im having trouble finding a realistic price on a new 9mm M&P can anyone help me out in finding pricing on one? im assuming the prices on their sites are no where near what i will be paying.

also this is for bapple, how much goes into changing out sites? like putting on night sites?

Check out Whittaker Guns on facebook, can't beat their prices and they have an amazing selection. They update their inventory on there daily. I scored a Ruger SR1911 this morning from them for only $629.99.

This doesn't answer any of your questions, but you made a good choice on the M&P. The M&P 9c was my first handgun, and I've been more than happy with the gun. I think I paid 530ish. Good luck on the search

Not that i know of, they are good people though and help out with any questions you may have. As you can imagine they're very hard to get through to on the phone, which is the only hassle in dealing with them.

Just to give you an idea of prices, they had a M&P40C for $467 (should be about the same as the 9mm). No clue what you could get one locally for as I've never priced that gun. And they had Shields of all calibers for $370.

'These' plastic compacts feel really nice, what are you worried about? My P2000 is a compact but outside of barrel length it's made for 'man hands' for sure. The grips are adjustable as well, so can make it real fat if you want.

ETA: Holy shite that 9c is small as frick. Nevermind what I said above. That looks like a subcompact to me. A compact of a compact.
