I could probably do with an upgrade to my keyboard/mouse. Somewhere in the 40$ range for each.

Not home to do a pcpartpicker build, but I'll at least give a basic list without actually looking at prices.
i5-4670k
Hyper 212 evo cooler
Probably an asrock extreme3
8gb (2x4gb) of some decent 1600mhz ddr3 at 1.5v and CL9
120-ish GB SSD of a reputable brand and decent speeds (maybe a regular Samsung 840 or some sandforce controller based SSD)
Hard drive for storage. Seagate barracuda or WD black or blue, or whatever else is out there.
Radeon 7870 or 7950
600+ watt psu - bronze, silver, or gold, by seasonic, ocz, corsair, etc., modular or semi modular.
Mid tower of your choice, fractal design perhaps.
Optical drive if you want it.
I'm sure someone here can make a few brand/spec tweaks to get that to $1000. Im just pulling this out my arse with no price checks.

going to use it for HTPC. I'll have a completely another build in the next month or so and I'm taking these parts and using it for that.

I was looking at this card and some people were mentioning compatibility issues. someone complained about it in the reviews and I googled it to see others mention it, but the language they use is foreign to me.
any insight on this? I have an asus mobo about 2 years old(the model eludes me at the moment).

You can add this mouse to the build
Someone else can help you with the keyboard. Bruce pretty much nailed the build

the way people were talking... the mobo/build in general. like the mobo would not recognize or load up the card.
it could have been only with SLI

Nice card. His system won't post. It could be a number of things and it's probably isolated to his particular build. The reviews on Newegg are like asking people what they think about terrorism, most of the comments are going to be negative. Most people will only put forth effort to put a review if they have something to bitch about.

Word, I've primarily been an Intel guy with NVIDIA. Is crossfire worth it for adding a second card down the line?

That's cool, I was just giving you options. yes, if you REALLY need it. That 7950 will push just about every game(right now) on ultra/1080p at 60fps.

The amd build is a better bang for buck.
What's wrong with that mouse? I like it and stout liked it too. For the price it works great. I didn't think he wanted something expensive but I may be wrong.

I think so but mainly for the overclock potential.

I'm a peripheral snob, that's what.
Can you even adjust the polling rate with that mouse?(i.e. Do you even lift, bro?)

Well that will come down to home much he wants to spend. For $15 I recommend it.
Posted on 7/13/13 at 3:11 pm to Mr Gardoki
right on. My philosophy is basically, if you're going to spend $1000 on a build then you should have equally performing peripherals. The mouse is one of the most important items for gaming. I would skimp on a keyboard but get a good mouse. If he has larger hands then I would suggest the deathadder. Hell you can get one of those at walmart for like $50 and it's worth it. I have the 2013 deathadder that has rubber grips on the side and an upgraded laser and they run around $70. I've had both track a lot better than the cheaper mice that I had before. For less than $50 I would say the logitech g400 especially if you have smaller hands.

I don't play FPS as much as you. This mouse recently replaced my wireless Logitech cheap mouse
Posted on 7/13/13 at 3:22 pm to Mr Gardoki
Ahhh yeah, I really only play FPS, so that's all I really think about. If I wanted to play a RTS then I would just go shopping with my wife.
