Gay marriage proposition

So I'm new to the poli board but read it every once in a while.

I've been reading that gay marriage is immoral and just plain yucky and therefore should be illegal. Also, because God wouldn't want it that way....etc.

Here is my proposition...
My religion (Jewish) does not allow the eating of pork or mixing meat and dairy. Therefore because your religion has the power to make gay marriage illegal, I believe my religion should have the power to make bacon and cheeseburgers illegal.

Fair compromise?

ETA: Obviously my position is legalize gay marriage. If you are that against it, simply just don't do it or attend gay weddings. What they do has no affect on your life.

Only issue I have against it would be people exploiting it for tax benefits which I guess heterosexual marriage could be used for that as well.

I say we just throw the government out of marriage and then I don't give a damn who or what gets married, it wouldn't affect me

Churches already deny plenty of marriages because the 2 people aren't virgins (I know several people this happened to). I don't see why they would be forced to marry gay couples either. Legalize it, let each institution decide for themselves, but this way they can always go to a court house and get married legally.

That is one of the weakest arguments I've heard. You may want to spend some time really reflecting on the issue if you want to be taken seriously.

You mean religions have the power to interpret scriptures how they see fit and then lay down the law to their members as to what is enforced and how strongly?

So, G...your religion (Jewish) accepts the practice of homosexuality as being sinless? No problem? Equal to heterosexual marriage?

well not to be rude but i dont care what your religion bans from you. if my religion says gay marriage is bad then that should be concerns of me and those who worship it. im catholic and we all know what they think of it, which is why i do not follow it. its hypocritical of them and its not very much in stance with their "we are all the lords children and should be accepted as we are" credo..now be honest with, do you eat pork? i know ill chow down on a hamburger on a friday with no problem, much to the chagrin of all my family lol.

they just want acknowledgement and the tax advantages... Once it's legal, they will then go door to door demanding public surveys on this issue...rooting out, who is not for gay marriage..

it won't ever stop...

I'll agree to outlaw bacon and cheeseburgers if you agree to outlaw same sex marriage.

Is it a deal?

This is exactly the point I'm trying to make. I don't care what your religion says, it shouldn't have any affect on what happens in US legislature. We are a country with separation of church and state, therefore saying Gay marriage is bad on the basis of the bible should not be allowed at all.

Of course I eat pork. I love me some pork chops or bacon. My point is that's my choice. If you choose to not want to deal with gays or gay marriage that's your choice, but don't make it illegal for everyone else. If you're grossed out by it then that's your personal issue, not a legal issue.

Yet carp, a fish that literally eats shit, is kosher.

Have a good Passover, but religious food rules are ridiculous.

The gov should get out of marriage all together.

Religious people myself included should be focusing on a 50 percent divorce rate rather than the 2 percent who are trying to get married.

No, it is just as much of a sin, but the point I'm making is don't inject your religious views into legislature. In Israel, where church and state are not separated, it is illegal to perform a same sex marriage. If we are going to be a country with religious freedom, that means you don't put religious views into legislature.

Nonsense.

If citizens were not allowed to lobby their legislators to pass laws based on their personal religious (moral) beliefs then only citizens with non religious or amoral beliefs could lobby their legislators to pass laws.

Separation of Church and State actually means the State cannot force its citizens to follow an official State religion.
