at least 3 times a week. Strengthens his arm especially if he is a pitcher or outfielder. Make sue he has proper form

Well it took 3 tries but finally a viable answer. Thanks. He has a good pitching coach. We use long-toss for strengthing the arm. I just do not want to over do it.

3x per week is good enough. It will help him tremendously with his arm strength. I would probably on do it 3x per week that he hasn't pitched though. Shouldn't over do it, the arm needs rest.

correct...

but should also be doing other conditioning exercises at the same time and do not do long toss without proper warm up and cool down.

3x a week max, don't do it two days in a row. Make sure he stretches a lot before and after. Don't ever use weighted balls to strengthen his arm, wreaks havoc on the shoulder and elbow.

I agree with 3x's also. Warm him up good for a half hour beforehand.

My son is 6 and we long-toss only twice a week. If he had his way, we'd do it everyday. But we warm up with grounders for 15 minutes or so, then go to the driveway and work grounders for another 15 minutes or so then I slowly start stepping back until I reach his max. When I find it, I step back in a few steps and give him about 20 throws and that's it.

But I'm no coach by any stretch of the imagination so take it for what it's worth...lol. I've only talked to a few guys who's opinion I trust on the matter.

Long toss strengthens your arm. Throwing curves is what hurts kids arms. Hell when I was that age we played neighborhood baseball all day with a tennis ball(bad for the arm) then went to practice or a game that night. We all had strong arms. Even better for strengthining an arm is letting them throw a football all day.

Now that you say that, that could be why my son's arm is as good as it as. He loves football. We throw probably 5 days a week, just because he loves chunking it. I bought him the regulation pee-wee ball last year for when he starts next year.

Long toss is good. It helps them strengthen their arms to prevent injury. A big part of it is listening to your arm. I would say 5 times a week. That's what I did. But if you feel any pain at all shut it down and rest accordingly. Also running helps to break up and loosen the arm. Hence why a lot of pitchers run after they threw a game. Also stretching the arm out and moving slowly to long distances is key.

I found that throwing a football prior to a baseball game my arm felt much looser. I did it before some games in highschool and my fastball had some extra pep on it.

Throwing a football is probably easier on the arm also.

Why are you clocking the pitches of a 5th and 6th grader?

Pitching coach clocked him. I've been catching him since he could throw. He's getting bigger and stronger and threre's no doubt when they start throwing hard. This may be the last year I can catch him. The ball comes in too fast.

Anyway someone asked why he takes lessons? I want him to learn how to properly train and use his arm. I put him in lessons to learn proper throwing mechanics. The pitching was a surprise. He is really a hitter, but now through hard work, he has become a pretty good pitcher.

If you are spending your time and money on a good pitching coach then he should be the one advising on how often to have your son long toss. I would have him set up his entire throwing and work out program to try and prevent any injuries. You have to be very careful at that age especially if your son is big for his age as a lot of times his ligaments, joints and growth plates are behind in development and it is very easy to injure a young ballplayer.
