That is bullshite. Either the server or the manager screwed you.
If it doesn't say it on the menu for 4 persons, then they can't legally put it on. You have to be forewarned. And there is no way that applebees actually has a policy to grat 4 tops. 8 minimum probably.

You could call and complain...but you will probably only get a gift card for a return trip. Would you really want to ever go back?

Normally in situations like this, they either refund your money or they give you some sort of comp like a dinner for two or something with value. It was definitely the server who added it. They only have to change the number of guests in the party from 4 to 8. It takes about 2 seconds to do.

Isn't gratuity based on pretax total?

I always tip on the total with tax personally, so you probably "proved your point" an didn't even know it.

Ex. $45.87+9%tax= $50 ($10 tip is 20%)

An 18% grat would be $8.26, or 16.5% of the tax total, so at most your griping about 1.5%

4 people and they added gratuity? That is crap. I do 6 or more and my girls know I will remove it if there are any issues. It is pretty easy to tell the legit issues with the made up ones.

I would have paid cash, and paid zero grat.

I wonder how many people notice that on their bill. Maybe that's what they're going for. They're hoping that your average Joe will look at the bill and just pass over that little factor to look at the final price.

Server outside smoking.I'm not an Applebee's fan either.I get what you're saying. It cost you a bad experience and a little money for a "Get Out of Applebee's Dinner" card."Let's go to applebee's."
"No.You remember the bad service we got last time."
So.you got that going for you.

So you complained to the manager before you got the bill?
Sounds like he told the waitress you were gonna short her on the tip, so she hit you with the 18% grat.

Exactly. That is hilarious if Applebee's does this now.

I have... but it's usually during "special events" only. I do think that generally anything less than 6 people for an autograt is ridiculous.

You should have played the world's smallest violin for all the waiters out there.

No lol.

The check had the amount.
the tip and on the credit card print out, it had the two numbers combined.

I was grated I know when a grat has been added to a check. It wasn't really a big deal. I'm going to break my future step daughters away from only eating Applebee's, Olive Garden and Casa Garcia.

Your reading comprehension is horrid.

1. Not a big deal. I tipped and didn't complain and will not complain as I know what its like to be a server.

2. I had horrible service

3. I was forced to tip a higher than 15% amount.

I usually tip 20% as its an easy figure and a reward for good service. Heck I tip even more when I am wowed by service.

Prior to AppleBees I had a Dinner Friday that cost me $85 in which I left a $20 tip. And a Lunch that costs $145 that I left a $30 tip for. I was given the choice to tip. Even though one of those services was not outstanding. My way of Stiffing is 15%.

I don't stiff.

I go out to eat more than average and tip well.

MY POINT IS I SHOULD NEVER BE FORCED TO TIP EVER!!! UNLESS I HAVE A LARGE PARTY!!

Service was poor, and she knew it. So she grated me.

18% as oppossed to 15% for 2 adults and 2 kids.

What's that? Maybe an extra $1.5?

I see what you're saying but I wouldn't be mad enough to post about it.

We only had two adults and two kids. That's two guests, the check said two guests. Why charge me 18%.

I feel for the Preacher who stiffed the server now.
It was the principle of the matter.

Just crappy. I hate being forced to pay a tip. Especially when service was bad.
Did you speak to the manager about this?

maybe, but the tip line. Instead of saying "Tip" said "Additional Tip"

The meal was dirt cheap and the food was a step above Piccadilly. It was just about taking the girls out, and letting them pick. I didn't complain there or voice any disgust. Because in all honesty The difference in price between my tip and what I was charged was $1.89 but its just the fact that my service was horrible. That I feel a tip is something that is necessary, but shouldn't be expected for horrible service.

I mean no drinks until after appetizers were out, no napkins or silverware given at all. Sides were wrong. A dish was wrong. Dessert for one kid was brought out five minutes before the other, and you know that causes an issue.

Again, I'm not at the pawnshop, pawning my TV because I was charged an extra $2 or so. I am just making a point that I think it is utter bullshite to be grated when you have a small table.
