I have heard that Macallan is the best you can buy. Is this right or are there better brands?

Macallan 18 & 25 for sure, there are many just depends on your taste.
Laphroaig 15 is amazing if you enjoy a very peaty, earthy flavor.
Aberfeldy 21
Brora 30
Glenfiddich 12
Glenlivet 18
Lagavullin 12
Scotch has so many subtleties & regions it is distilled in you just have to taste your way, personally I prefer single malts to blends.
Enjoy!!

Thanks Look forward to trying out some of the ones that you mentioned.
So far I've tried Macallan Sherry Oak 12 and Glenlivet 12. I like both but think that the Macallan is way better IMO.
What is the difference in taste between the Macallan sherry oak and royal oak?

that's like asking who's the best woman. it's an act in futility.

Try Glenmorangie Port wood and The Balvenie Doublewood. Both 12 I believe

I hate the "best threads". They should be "your favorite threads". Food and drink is just so subjective.

One of those 'the best is the one you have at the time' things
Posted on 2/14/13 at 6:18 pm to glassman
Agreed. "Top 10 list" threads are equally as stupid.

Big shortage of macallan right now, if you can't find any try balvenie..... Great stuff

I like the Glenlivit 15, but I have never made the case that it is "the best". It's just what I prefer. I don't think I even really believe in "the best", at some point, given a certain degree of quality, it comes down to personal taste.

Received a bottle of Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban which is aged 10 years in American White Oak then finished in Ruby Port Casks. Tasted more like a fine Cognac with smokey undertones. I highly recommend it.

Lagavulin 16. FTMFW

Macallan 25 is probably my favorite that I've tried. Balvenie 14 yr Caribbean Cask is also very good.

Maccallan is my go to, but everyone else here is correct, tough to say one is the best

I'm a firm believer that the next Scotch will be the best Scotch. Therefore, I have good reason to keep trying them.
