| What are your goals? (Posted on 2/1/13 at 11:59 am)
Kind of an open ended question I guess. I know a lot of you save a large percentage for retirement. Are you planning to retire rich? Early? Be. Able to travel once retired? Open your own business? With that said, when saving at high amounts, what kind of lifestyle do you live? Do you think it's worth sacrificing now for much better down the road? Especially with uncertainty thrown in there? Just a college student trying to get ideas for my financial future

1) To be able to buy whatever I want without having to worry about paying for it. Obviously this only works if you don't have expensive tastes and a gold digging wife/gf/mistress. 2) To reach retirement age and have the option of retiring, or working full-time, or anything in between. 3) Two chicks at the same time, man! frickin' aye.

You just need to do what's best for you. I enjoyed myself a lot in my 20's and even though I could have more money and be farther along in my career at this point I don't regret it for one second because I have some awesome memories and life experiences. Nobody is promised tomorrow. I'm not saying live like you're going to die tomorrow but enjoy your life. No matter how much you save, you can't take it with you.

I've always thought that as long as I can buy anything I want, within reason, without having to change my lifestyle, or worry about bills, that would be my goal. I contribute to my retirement every month, but I, by no means, am as motivated as some of the people on this board. What's the point of making a good income if you don't have fun spending gas you go. I'd much rather live comfortably while I'm you get than have a lot of money saved up and be too old to have any fun.

Goals: 1) Max out 401k, ROTHs etc. 2) Enjoy myself in the now, I could be dead 20 years before my planned retirement. 3) Travel to foreign lands once a year. 4) Accomplish 2 and 3 by not buying electronics every year, cars, and skipping out on all those little pointless Tchotchkes people buy and fill their house with. I live life to experience things, not to accumulate stuff.

Contribute at least 20% of gross towards retirement accounts. Identify what things in life you dont really care about and minimize costs in this area... for example driving a Honda til the wheels fall off vs leasing a new bimmer every 3 years. Identify what things you DO care about and dont be afraid to spend a little extra on them... for example traveling or building your dream home. The key is balance. You shouldnt live large in every category of your budget but you cant pinch pennies in every category either "Moderation in everything, neither abstinence nor excess breeds virtue" -Voltaire

I save a lot. I spend a lot. I eat a lot. I drink a lot. I travel a lot. I work a lot. I want to continue doing all of those things except for the last.

I got this covered. My Honda is a 1996 DX two door standard transmission.

My goals for now are to be able to put 15% in 401K and max out my IRA 401K is my conservative plan and IRA is hyper aggressive My short term goals are to 1: be debt free (still have a little left on the car at low interest so I'm just going to pay it off on schedule, not early) 2: Have enough in liquid savings to get by for 18 months without work (this I know is going to take me a considerable amount of time) I want to have a large stockpile of cash in savings.

1) Pay off my home 2) Remain debt free 3) Double my 401K by the time I retire. 4) Stay healthy 5) Send son to college at an SEC University 6) Survive my wife who is in menopause. 7) Buy a Mustang GT as a toy. These are not necessarily in order.

Save enough money to where I'm not worried about retirement. Spend enough money to where I get to experience life.

I heard this from a retired magistrate many years ago, and it has been my mantra: "55 and out" I will do whatever it takes to retire at 55, and live anyway I wish. Maybe get an RV and follow Ole Miss football games, like I see 300-400 other slackers do every fall season.

Might be dumb but not planning for the future. Lost my mom to cancer at 60 and not married nor have kids. I will be working for the rest of my life in some capacity if I am not stricken with some disease. I have a few hundred thousand but beyond that trying to enjoy things now.
