lol...Most families who send their kids that don't live in Crowley or Rayne either have family ties or rather not send their child to whatever public school in their district. Pretty laughable to think ND recruits.

I do not know the exact %. but from the people I know in those schools Lafayette high will more than likely be select this year. Acadiana comeaux and carencro another 1-2 years away. There programs are doing well.

So it was just disciplined play that allowed Evangel, a school with a 1A enrollment, to thrash West Monroe, a school with a 5A enrollment, several consecutive years in the Dome? Gotcha

That is one school. Curtis is a second one. There may be one or two more, but wouldn't it be better to just attack the problem?

I went to a private years ago. My kids go to another one now. Both schools have incredibly inferior athletes compared with even an average public. Both also have a great deal of success. Discipline and dedication are the reason period.

What really bothers me though, is I'm afraid this will worsen recruiting by a large margin if privates totally leave LHSAA then we may have a real issue. I'd hate my school to be basically forced to recruit to compete. Bringing in kids strictly for athletic reasons would destroy what the school is all about. I'd bet this is try for all but maybe 3-4 of all the privates out there.

Yeah. Not sure schools that don't even have football should be voting on what happens to the football playoffs.

uh, because they want the same support when it comes time to split the other sports

Wait are you complaining that selcet schools will now be hurt by recruiting from the traditional private schools that have been recruiting? I guess you fully appreciate why public schools wanted away from that BS.

None of those schools will go select. Their boards will cap enrollment at the principals request

The vote was 206-119. The LHSAA has 90 private members, which means only about 29 public schools wanted to keep the playoffs together. 29 schools is not even 10%. Which means the public schools see this as a huge win, and are probably partying at this point

So a public school program that benefits kids will be capped by educators because of athletic considerations? But I thought public schools had no control over their enrollments? Anyone that wants to be in a LPS school of choice has a right to be there if they meet the criteria. How do they cap a successful academic program in Lafayette Parish schools? Who decides who does or doesn't get it? If they are 24% they are good? If they are 25% they have to get out and play in the "separate but equal" select admission playoffs? When has "separate but equal" ever survived a judicial review in modern times? That is part of the whole majority to minority mess, to eliminate separate but equal from the Public School system and spread out the demographics in the system.

I appreciate your argument. I can see both sides. I went to public school and I coached in privates. I saw first hand how publics schools in Lafayette work in the offseason (some good and some bad) and and I saw first hand how hard both sides work. I saw kids that started at public schools left and thrived (academically, socially, athletically) at privates and some kids with huge potential left privates and disappeared off the face of the Earth at public schools. I have seen kids that couldn't adjust to a private school go to a public and thrive. I have seen both sides and I feel where you are coming from.

However, I dont think you have any idea how complicated this issue really is. The fact that they dont have a clear definition of who is select and who is not, how the measure is supposed to actually work, and if it is really good for the kids is troubling. It is not about who wins or doesn't win state championships. That is not the reason schools offer sports. Winning is a team goal, not a reason for existence. Sadly there are schools that sell out for winning at seemingly all costs. They should be dealt with accordingly.

The fact that high ranking members of the LHSAA hierarchy dont believe this will stand judicial review means they know the whole thing was just a big grandstanding effort to get the LHSAA to do the job they are paid to do. The Carver principal outlined his lawsuit in his speech on the floor.

I quoted a State Senator from Lafayette that point blank said his office is about to get involved. Page Cortez is a former Lafayette High player, a former Lafayette High coach, a former STM coach and a former STM parent. He is also someone that will be a Gubernatorial candidate in the next few years. He is a serious man, in a powerful position and he is going to join a Legislative effort that politicians across the state will be happy to get involved in because they have been waiting for an opportunity to get into the affairs of the LHSAA for a long time.

This whole thing has opened up Pandora's box for Kenny Henderson and he will be powerless to stop it. When the courts and the politicians get involved there is no way the membership will decide how this plays out. The reason private supporters like me are against this is because some of us know we have crossed the point of no return. We have lost the initiative to maintain the autonomy of the LHSAA to manage its own affairs. That is the reason for the call for the public vote, now everyone that was there is on the record for how they really feel. There is no hiding now, and for some principals their hypocrisy will be their downfall.

Here is my prediction, the lawsuits will start flying this spring. The Legislature will have two separate committees (one senate and one from the house) start digging into the LHSAA. The proposal to split the playoffs will be thrown out by the courts and a new measure will be floated at the summer meetings. However this time everyone will know where everyone stands and the venom and vindictiveness will be off the charts from BOTH sides.

Any hope that we may have had of this being resolved in house will be out the window. The LHSAA as we know it, love it or hate it, will cease to exist.

When the courts and the politicians get involved, nobody wins.

I think it's obvious. The further from a private school a player is, the less motivation the player will have to go all the way to that school.

Similarly, the next Beckwith could go to, say, Redemptorist or Southern Lab, but that's a 30 minute haul each way and that is a detriment.

I know Curtis has had kids from Houma-Thibodaux, but let's face it, the bulk of their kids are Jefferson Parish kids, plus some Orleans, St. Charles and a few St. John's kids.

You may not have a "non select" program in Lafayette parish in the near future

As I opined earlier, if the select division has the prestige -- and I think it will, heck even the name, "select," suggests it's better than the other division -- then public schools will try to manipulate their way INTO the select division.

Let me make this clear (not necessarily directed at you)

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE IF A PRIVATE SCHOOL GETS KIDS FROM OUTSIDE THE PUBLIC SCHOOL ZONE THE PRIVATE SCHOOL IS LOCATED IN?

It's not like most private schools can exist drawing kids only from the public school attendance zone the private school is in.

It's an absurd suggestion.

Let me spell it out to you since you don't seem to get it. Let's say Parkview Baptist doesn't recruit (and by and large, it does not). Well now PBS is going to have to compete with the Catholic League, etc. In order to stay competitive in the class they are in, they may HAVE to recruit.

So yeah, select schools are going to have to recruit even more to compete. By the very name of the division they are in -- the "select" division -- it implies a more competitive division. Better step up your game.

you look at a school like West Monroe (and others)... their boosters should be pissed if they willingly stay in a second-rate league

Germany thought it was a good idea to invade Russia too.

Lots of people can agree on a stupid idea. This qualifies as such a case.

Here's their plan:

1. Let's kick out our best teams from the private schools

2. Let's kick out our most resourceful public schools too.

3. Let's call it the "select" division -- kind of like USSSA baseball and AAU basketball -- just to reinforce the notion that they play a better brand of football in that division

4. Let's give out trophies to the rest of us and pretend we're just as good.

Brilliance, LHSAA. The dumbest people in the state seem to be our educators these days.

Agreed. My theory is they manipulate their attendance zone to redistrict an affluent part of their school district into an undesirable neighboring district (say, majority black Richwood, although I'm not sure that's possible), then leave them an easy "exception" that would allow them to come back to WM as out-of-zone kids. All of a sudden, you're school is 40 percent out-of-zone kids and, voila, you're select too!

Do it smart and you can get your numbers to reflect that you are a select school.

There is no probably. They got their cake and are eating it too. Milk the private schools' money and then send them to duke it out while all the public schools make the playoffs. Everyone gets a trophy and they still have our money to pay for them.

The problem for the publics is the cake might be snatched away before they can take a bite. The privates are having meetings all over the state tomorrow.
