Damn, might as well call that the series finale for me. Honestly I didn't think it should've gone pass 3 seasons anyway. They could have made a better final if they weren't chasing the money like many other shows now, instead of making the best show possible.

Well that was about the worst ending of a season in a top TV show I think I've ever seen. But the actor refusing to return really forced their hand so I guess it's not as bad but they should have written the character out differently.

I cant beleive they wrote Mathews character out that way. I knew he was going to die as soon as they shot to his car at the end. The series should just end but "jumping the shark" is too irresestable.

ETA: Branson is a pussy for not fricking the maid

I think they should have entertained replacing the actor and retaining the character if possible.

I thought I was the only twisted one thinking that.

Yeah, it wouldn't have been optimal, but better than this development. It looks pretty final, but without one single word after the incident, it could be some stretch of a plot twist would change what appears to be the outcome right now. Even though that would be a leap, I'd prefer such a leap than to take this character out of the story. I feel the chemistry between him and Mary, his bridgework between Branson and Lord Grantham, and his relationship with Lord Grantham are integral to the whole story line. It will be a struggle for DA to maintain a meaningful plot course absent his role in the whole thing, IMO.

ETA... found this LINK that tells me no hoped for "leap" is going to happen. DA will go on, however different as it may be. Fans will have to deal with it. But I still believe Dan Stevens has made a major career mistake.

Well then they need to fast forward a few years because nobody wants to grieve Matthews death when season 4 comes back. Half of season 3 was morning Sybil.

Since March they knew Stevens might be leaving the show so why take the relationship between M&M down this road, especially with Sybil's death suffocating half of season 3?

ETA: Its just too much for the viewers to take, it really is.

I'd like to take a couple of 'em the other direction, personally.

You got to hand it to Jimmy, the entire kitchen staff wants to screw him but he remains asexual. The writters give you hints to revealing his sexuality only to completely mind frick you the next episode.

I wasn't talking about Jimmy.

ETA:

You're right about Jimmy being pretty understanding. I guess during that "one year later" he had a little time to get used to things.

I realize they need drama, but much of it seems overly contrived. I think this will essentially be the high water mark of the show.

Brits aren't nearly as off-put by killing off lead characters as Americans are. Just watch Mi-5 (Spooks)... They take out one or two leads every season, usually in spectacular fashion.

I couldn't agree more.

I guess the show will go back to finding Mary another husband. Lord knows we suffered through 2 seasons of her trying to find Matthew. Now, we will have to listen to her bitch about every man not being Matthew.
