I've shot a Remington 870 from when I was a senior in HS, before that an Ithaca Model 37. Thinking of getting a 11-87 or a Beretta of the same type (semi-auto)....Any thoughts on the 11-87?

Lots of people are Browning loyal and I'm a fan of their over/unders and obviously the 870 is a quality gun. If I bought a pump though I'd probably go benelli nova though.

Anyways.. I'm not a fan of the 11-87's. I have a Beretta Urika 2. Best shotgun I have ever owned. Bout $900-1000. It's super light and barely any recoil. If you shoot clays w/ 2 3/4's you don't even feel it. My buddy just bought the camo 11-87 that shoot 3 1/2's. I shot his with 3" shells and first time I shot it it kicked back and nailed my lip. I was like no thanks. And the forearm just felt cheap. It wobbled all over the place.

But it's whatever feels good to you when you throw it up and in your price range

11-87 or the older 1100 will shoot circles around any Beretta or Benelli. Great guns.

Got one of these for Christmas last year. Sportsman model with the camo. I'm the only one of my buddies without an Italian gun (they have the usuals: SBEII, Xplor A400, Vinci II) but my 11-87 keeps up with the best of them. Great gun at a great price IMO. My only knock against mine is the 3" chamber, wish I had that extra 1/2" for a little more versatility. But Remington has 11-87's with the 3-1/2" chamber also, so no problem there.

If you're in the market for an autoloader then this is a great option but if you're considering the Beretta's also then that broadens your price range considerably. I'd also take a look at the 1100's, shot a few of those in my day and they're great guns too.

The forearm on mine is plastic just like all the other synthetics but the fit is great, no wobbling or anything like that.

My dad has the 1187 Ducks Unlimited Edition. We don't shoot it very often, but when we do, it breaks clays all day long. This version is a bit too pretty to take on a hunt, but I think the first semi auto shotgun I buy will be an 1187. Well, that or a Winchester SX3. Here's our 1187.

But I think the Winchester SX3 is also a great shotgun.

I bought an 11-87 (around $580 if memory serves me) last April to replace my 30 year old 1100 that my dad gave me. I have shot duck with #6s and #4s, hog with rifled slugs, dove with #8s, and sporting clays and trap with 1200fps target loads. I have had not 1 issue with it. I had debated getting a new 1100 but the $ difference at the time made me go with the 11-87 and I'm glad I did. Great all around gun.

The newer 11-87 shotguns are on the money. Older ones from back before the mid 1990's were crap/ jam masters. They were built very cheap compared to a 1100.

Oh, they fit good when you go to shoot birds. Look for the double barral set.

Thanks for all the good words.

Yeah I'd shoot the hell out of that Ithaca...but it's an older gun and not steel shot rated. I was scared as hell to shoot steel through it first time since it's a 30" full choke..and Dad's to boot.

I love the bottom ejection too...I sometimes shoot better left handed than right..(left eye dominant)...and that makes it easy to shoot.

1187 are all stamped parts and lower grade, get a B gun that fits you and be done with it. I have had three 1187s over the years, 1st one blew up on me when the bolt did not lock but the shell fired. This jammed the bolt back in the receiver and gun was a write off, Rem made it right and replaced the gun. Fortuneately no one was hurt when bolt came back and I remember lots of fire coming out and the report was amazing. B guns are all machined steel, like older 1100s and will last. You get what you pay for.

Have shot mine for 15 years and have never had the first problem out of it. Only knock may be that I can't shoot over a 3".

Plazadweller – as I recall I used the Lord’s name a few times after my 1187 mishap but then thanked the baby Jesus that no one was hurt. My padnah and I were down to one gun so we shared it and still killed a limit. It was a pump and I had not shot one in yrs – my buddy kept yelling pump pump

When my wife commented on the cost of my B gun I mentioned about the 1187 that blew up and that I was shooting w/ the kids now – she was all good with her son using a B gun, she’s not so worried about me – you cant kill bad grass

I've been looking at the Stoeger line and have read some good reviews about them.

Geauxt

Why did I get a 3rd – I needed a gun to hunt w/ and after the 1st one “blew up” I bought another until Rem replaced it - so I have had 3. At the time (13 yrs ago) there were not the choices in good semis that there is today – I bought the gun hunted w/ it for a few yrs then sold it for pretty much what I bought it for. My uncle has a SBE and other friends/cousins an M1 but Benellis don’t fit me well so I went w a Berreta. I shot a Berreta at a skeet range and just fell in love w it and not looked back, gave my 7 yr old urika to my son and bought another w kick off. I gave up shooting 3 1/2 “ shells and have a 3” gun – it works for me.
