Other than the tie ins, the BCS selection rules and team records, what else played into LSU's bowl...

-the way we played ?
-who we lost to ?
-Johnny Football?
-national perception of our coach?
-tv ratings
-the way we played in last year's bowl ?

What else could we have done other than win to affect the outcome?

Way we played may have a LITTLE to do with it

Mainly, Johnny football and SEC wanting UGA in a good bowl.

Shitty bowl... but one of the best match ups...

We really shouldn't be surprised considering how bad we looked against Ole Miss and Arkansas.

Johnny Football is one of the most exciting players in college football. Former big 12 team, now SEC type build up. Our boring predictable retarded inept offense.

In general, people want to see Johnny Football, not watch us toss dive up the middle 100 times.

The fact that our stadium is half empty by the start of the 4th quarter of a top 25 conference game that was not a blowout.

I'm not one of the people that feels the need to lecture fans on when they leave a game, but Bowl officials notice things like this.

Very east champ. There were only two teams that were ever going to go to Atlanta this year once Clemson was locked in as he ACC #2. Texas A&M or LSU. Why? UF and Bama in BCS, USCe just played Clemson and UGA opens with Clemson the first game of the 2013 season. Then, the cotton picks in front of the Chicken. Pretty darn easy to see why the cotton picked A&M with them being in Texas and the heisman winner. Remember, its about MONEY. LSU would have been in the cotton had Northern Illinios not snuck into the the BCS because A&M was not playing Texas.

So there you go, a bunch of unfortunate circumstances that all went the wrong way has poor LSU playing a BSC type matchup in the bowl season.

BS. They only notice the ticket sales. They DGAF if anyone leaves early, they've already collected the gate.

And you don't see the correlation between Bowl tickets sales and a fanbase that doesn't stay past halftime if its not a Top 5 match up? If fans don't stick around in their own stadium, the chances of them buying tickets and traveling during the New Year's holidays for a non Top 5 match up aren't that good. Plus, outside of the Cotton Bowl in 2010, LSU has struggled to sell its allotment to non-BCS bowls in the last 10 years.

The fact that you think this is a possible reason for lsu's bowl choice shows utterly fricking stupid some of the lsu fanbase is.

Hmmmm. And how many presales did LSU take for the Cotton Bowl this year? I asked for 4 of those 20K, but I ain't going to the frickin chickin bowl. Appears many others feel the same way.

And IMO, there is little correlation between how many leave early and how many would go to a bowl. Many of the ones leaving early are the blue hairs and others that only go to say they went. It's a social status thing. They will definitely be at a good bowl game so they can crow about going at the next Junior League meeting.

Really????

The national perception of OUR coach is that the dude wins. Why do other schools make continuous runs at him (3 times, by my count in 8 years). He's a leader and winner. That's the national perception of him

In an effort to be as objective as possible, this is what I think. Bowls are about a lot of things - one of the chief considerations the networks have is ratings. Reality is, this year and back to 1/9 forward, LSU has been about as exciting to watch play football as watching paint dry. I don't care if we struggled our way to a 10-2 record, our offense has all but stunk. It hasn't been pretty or fun to watch, week in, week out. Those who consider ratings would have to be considering that factor. No excitement = low ratings.

What else could we have done other than win?
IMO, we could have hired a real OC, fixed the red zone problem, and presented an exciting offense that was in line with the talent LSU has at its disposal, regardless of injuries, suspensions, and other intangibles. All teams have those. Good teams manage to plug in the gaps sooner rather than later. One dimensional offense does not build ratings.

The responses to your questions would lead me to think that LSU was worthy of being in the best non-BCS bowl possible.

quote:

-the way we played ?

Debatable. You would have to follow LSU as a fan or local reporter to understand how well LSU played given the loss of starters and developing a QB, all the while playing in a league that had 6 teams finish in the top 10 in the BCS. Bowl selection committee members probably don't watch every game, and more than likely base their decisions on highlights only.

quote:

-who we lost to ?

This plays into LSU's favor. We lost to the #2 and #3 BCS teams by a total of 12 points. Impressive part of the resume.

quote:

-Johnny Football?

Of course. This fact plays in favor of Texas A & M compared to every other 10 win SEC team. The guy is exciting to watch, which plays into your other question: tv ratings.

quote:

-national perception of our coach?

Plays into LSU's favor. The national perception of Les Miles is one of the greatest selling points to a bowl committee. The guy is likable to non-LSU fans, and respected for keeping LSU at such a high level of competition on a yearly basis. Rarely does he have a down year, i.e. 2008 and 2009. LSU has never been with the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan, Alabama, etc. for the better part of college football history. Now, we are always a part of the national conversation, thanks to the a good run by the last 2 coaches at LSU.

quote:

-tv ratings

LSU is a top-5 program over the last 10 years. Outside of Heisman Trophy candidates competing for other teams, LSU has no problem drawing favorable TV ratings.

quote:

-the way we played in last year's bowl ?

Outside of some LSU fans who can't get over one game, nobody remembers or cares what happened in one game. The only thing non-LSU fans remember and care about is the name of the winning team. I'm sure that a bowl committee member looks at the overall history of bowl play during the last 10 years and/or during the current coach's tenure, all of which is impressive.

folks have zero clue.

LSU played in the three highest rated CFB games this year: Bama, UF, SCar

after having the five highest viewed games last year

so you have zero clue on what you speak of. The LSU national brand, while uninteresting to you, draws national numbers for the last two seasons

- Louisiana has a small population. That affects TV ratings.
- Johnny Football is more marketable that LSU, right now.
- The Cotton Bowl Chairman is an aTm alumn.
- aTm beat Bama. That really hurt LSU more than helped.
-NIU got into the BCS. Otherwise it would have been LSU vs Texas in the Cotton.
