| How do you store your rice? (Posted on 12/2/12 at 5:02 pm)
I just opened my pantry and noticed my bag of wheat rice, which has probably been in there for about two months, was hard and discolored. I discovered what I have now identified as rice weevils meandering around in my pantry. It's pretty goddamn gross. My mom stores her rice in air tight glass containers but said she has found larvae in her rice bags upon opening them straight from the store. This is my first time having this issue. I've been killing the bastards one by one as I see them. Anyone have this issue before?

No particular way. Just in a plastic airtight jar/jug.

If it comes in plastic only - Seal it in a nice, heavy gallon ziploc bag from the start. If it started in a box - do the same as soon as you unseal the box. I do this with dry pasta as well. Except for spaghetti which I store in old Pringles containers.

Go to Target and get some good airtight containers. I store all my rice, pasta, cereals, sugar, flours etc...in them or large mason jars. If you have it in the rice you might as well toss anything else because they will spread fast. The problem is a lot of times these products may sit for a few months on a pallet in a warehouse or stockroom before even hitting the shelves.

Got a group of decanters for leftover dried rice, beans and pasta.

For rice, pasta, cereal and flour: freezer or an airtight container/ziplock bag. Throw a couple of bay leaves in the container too (except for cereal). Not sure what the bay leaf does, but I had a problem with flour bugs (little skinny brown things that I think came home with me from the store in a bag of rice) and they seem to avoid all containers with bay leaves. Clean your shelves with bleach & water and toss anything that could possibly be contaminated--pretty much anything starchy that was opened already.

I keep mine in its original bag in the refrigerator drawer.

I am concerned about what all I should just throw away. I had an unopened box of cereal, an unopened box of individually packaged grits, some gravy packets, etc. What are these bastards capable of chomping their way into?

The larvae eggs are already in there when you buy grains. When you get them home, put into the freezer for a few days, then store however you like.

I'd get rid of the cereal and the grits. The gravy packages I'd keep. I've had them in a cereal and not tossed everything and a week later I had them again. It's a few bucks but easier to just start fresh.

Anything air tight will do. shite I just wrap it up in its bag with a rubber band and never have a problem. Weevils can show up but they are rare if your house is well sealed and clean (not suggesting your house is unclean).

In an upstairs apartment. I was wondering where the hell these things come from.

They came in something you bought. That's why you need to pitch and start over. As I said, these items may sit for months in a warehouse and all of the items listed have the capability to carry them. Cereal seems to be the worst.

Not with rice, but with various other things like corn meal, pancake mix, etc. Everything like that now goes in zip lock bags, box and all. And rice gets transfered into a zip lock bag as soon as it's opened. After months of killing them on sight and throwing away infested products, I finally eradicated the little bastards this way.

No joke, I discovered later in life that I more than likely consumed an obscene amount of pest from my moms pantry. Rice was a big offender, she to this day stores it in the large sacks sometimes sealed, sometime not, but never airtight
