re: Former Louisiana Tech quarterback Phil Robertson gave up football for Ducks

He began his collegiate time at nearby Harding, where he dreamed of continuing his basketball career that began at West Monroe (La) High School under the leadership of current ULM baseball assistant Phil Keifenheim. While at Harding, he attempted to get a place on the team, but in an unconventional way.

"I challenged the coach, who was the badminton instructor, to a badminton match. I told him that if I won I got to be on the team. I did win, but it didn't land me anywhere; I guess I should've had more money back then. I likewise should've tried to play at NLU (as it was known in his era) for Mike Vining, but I don't think my parents were big enough boosters to pull that off; I was about 10 years too early for that."

One thing that Robertson was able to pull off though was the featuring of Malone Stadium in the very first episode of Duck Dynasty. In the episode, Willie is trying to get his wife Korie up to speed for the upcoming family football game. The game of course features his father Phil, who was a standout quarterback at rival Louisiana Tech and played ahead of NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw, before giving up the sport to focus on business.

"I wanted to show my roots, and feature the school," Willie said. "The chance came up and we thought it would be cool to do it out at the stadium. It looked so sweet on camera. I heard a ton of good comments from it, so I feel that

Although his time on campus was limited, Robertson did capture the intramural badminton title; fitting for someone that graduated in health & human performances.

what's wrong with them being outspoken on their faith? we need a little more of that in this country and less Teen Mom, Jersey Shore, Toddlers and Tiaras, etc.etc......

Phil Robertson and family have shown that being the salt of the earth is still cool...and having strong families is what makes this country strong...not dysfunctional families that live "drama" all the time...

just my .02....if you don't like the family prayer at the end...turn it off...

Amen, brother!

It is scripted. But funny. My kids love it. We watch it and laugh the whole time.

Better than the Disney junk that they watch.

This, and it's better than Swamp People.

They were on the news last night because Willie and his wife gave a talk at Harding College. I think both of them attended school there.

I had coach Keifenheim for World History at WMHS.

On thing about this, for where they lived and how old I think they are, they should have gone to West Ouachita.

I grew up about a mile from them and graduated high school in 89. That was the the last class that had to go to WMHS. The class after me got the choice to finish their last year at WMHS or be the first class at WOHS. The year after that had to go to WOHS.

That's actually one of the main reasons that I do like the show so much. It's a show that I don't mind my kids watching with me and my wife. There aren't many of those nowadays.

This. Our two granddaughters, whom we are raising, love this show, tape every episode and watch it with me every evening. Some of those episodes, we've seen 5 or 6 times. Duck Dynasty is family time here and it's fun for all of us.

DD has also become family time in my home...I DVR all the episodes and actually came home the other day to my 8 yr old watching it by himself...this makes me happy...knowing i don't have to worry about what he is seeing when he watched that show...

also...the other night i forgot the blessing at dinner and he reminded me we needed to do it...i think this was because of the way they end every show...

refreshing tv...

Yep good clean tv. A little slapstick comedy.

And like said. Don't have to worry about what your kids see when the watch.

Good for Mr. Phil.

There are an infinite number of things in life that are more important than football.

It is just so ridiculously scripted and contrived.

Of all the ones out there i find it to be the least. Or at least done well enough that it is enjoyable. Duck Dynasty is the best show on TV IMO.

Our 10 year old (the fiddle player) has a big picture poster of Kenney Chesney on her bedroom wall. Now she wants to take it down and replace it with a poster of Uncle Si. Last week, she told me, "I'd marry Uncle Si.". If I can find her a big poster of Uncle Si, I will replace Kenney C. in a heartbeat.

yeah like when they walk outside a store and some random guy drives up on a lawnmower in overalls and no shirt? Very good representation of the state.

I think he was talking about the kids saying "yes sir" and "no sir", being kind to people, putting faith and family first, teaching children there are things aside from Hollywood that classify as "entertainment", the value of a dollar, stuff like that.

And if the rest of the world thought Louisiana behaved like the Robertsons, and went around town on tractors with no shirts on spitting tobacco like that guy, I'd be fine with that too.

She especially wants to meet Uncle Si in person, Nodust. She'd like to meet all of them in person, actually, but Uncle Si is her absolute favorite. Gotta admit, I'd like to meet em, too, and thank em for doing something on tv that a whole family can watch and enjoy. This could become the new "Andy Griffith" model.

He'll probably start going to promos with Phil and Willie since he's so popular now. Check for the next time they'll be at cabelas.

The two closest Cabelas to us are located in Louisville, Ky. and Charleston, WV. Louisville is six hours from here and Charleston is about 4.5 hour drive. I'd take her if I knew they were gonna be there. We do have a Bass Pro Shop in the Sevierville, Tenn. area. That's about 2.5 hour drive. Do the DD guys ever go to Bass Pro Shop?
