Anyone drive one?
Looking at truck possibilities once mine gives out(215k and never had problems so hopefully no time soon.) The Tacoma's seem like well built little trucks that are fun to drive and hold value. I know their MPG isn't great compared to a 1/2 ton.
Anyone have some insight?

I still have my '99 ext. cab. 245,000 miles on it, and it has been in the shop once because my tail lights went out, and I couldn't find the broken wire. A guy came by my house yesterday to see if I was trying to sell it because it sits in the back now. I'm giving it to my BIL when he can drive. All i know is they are mighty proud of the newer ones, and can't be found for cheap. Great trucks though

I've got an '05 and it's been a good truck. I don't think I'll get another one just for the fact that I just want more room. Otherwise, I'd say go for it!

We've got a Hilux here, which from what I've read is the cheaper, foreign version of the Tacoma. They're good trucks, and take a beating. Driving and riding in the Hilux has me thinking about the Tacoma also.

my friend has an 09 crew cab trd sport edition and it's a nice little truck. they're pretty quick too

I got one when I got out of college. I loved it, but it wasn't big enough....should have gotten a 4 door.

97 ext cab 4x4 here with 178K. The engines are excellent and mine has held up well. I will drive mine until it needs another engine and seriously consider a retrofit at that time.

I've had an '05, '08, and now a '12 and absolutely love them. I'm getting right around 20mpg with mixed driving (including off road) which isn't bad for a 4 door 4x4 IMO. I tow a 19 ft bass boat with a 200hp motor with no issues. If you don't need a full size truck for heavy towing you can't beat a Tacoma.

They are the standard for longevity and will smoke any full sized truck off road that doesn't have rockwells and 44" boggers

A v6 with a standard transmission will give you the best fuel mileage with a 4x4. The 4bangers don't handle towing or oversized tires or extra weight in general very well.
ETA: And to put the power into perspective, most V8s of the early 90's were putting out around 200hp I believe. They had more torque, but those v6s like to rev

2002 4 door, 94000 miles, no problems. v6 motor. Feels and runs like lots of years and miles to go.

Those motors will freakin scream. That's why you need a manual transmission. Automatics will make those engines feel like turds if you're towing anything.
I had a V6 4x4 nissan frontier with an automatic in highschool. The automatic killed that truck. It couldn't pull shite because the tranny refused to let it rev like it wanted to. Despite what people want to think, reving an engine doesn't hurt your fuel economy if you aren't raw dogging it. It actually helps with a load on the engine. It's also MUCH better for the longevity of the motor.
ETA: My buddy's V6 tacoma would pull circles around my truck because he had a 5 speed and let the engine do what it wanted to do.

If you drive mostly highway the auto will get better MPG, I'm guessing because the auto is a 6 speed and the manual is a 5 speed. The manual is rated at 16/19 and the auto at 16/21. The only time I have gotten as bad as 16 is when there has been snow on the road and I drove in 4x4. If you keep the RPMs at 2k or less (around 68 mph) you can get 22+ strictly highway.
I ran 33 12.50s on my 08 and got around 17. Anything over a 265/75/16 (32s) really starts to kill the gas mileage in these trucks.
Eta I was hoping that Toyota would change to the dual VVTi engine that's in the new 4runners when they changed the 12s, but I guess they are waiting until they do a full redesign to upgrade the motor.

You can get a 5 or 6 speed manual depending on the enginer i believe. I don't have a heavy foot, and plan on getting a manual if i go the tacoma route so I think I can get decent mileage. Would probably stick to 31 all terrains or mild mud tires
